jgibson2's Full Review: Orange Guard Water Based Indoor/Outdoor Home Pest ...
My garage smells like oranges. So does the kitchen. More important, there's not an ant in sight.
We've been fighting the battle of the ants since early spring. Usually a few applications of Terro and the colonly collapses, leaving us ant-free for months. That didn't happen this year. We've battled wave after wave of tiny sugar-loving ants. They come in through the same kitchen window, lap up the Terro, and head back to the colony. We've been ant-free for a day or two at a time, so I think the Terro is still killing the ants, but there are just too many more of them for us to win the war that way.
We added assorted ant baits -- immediate kill as well as colony killer ants. My husband, against my wishes, has even sprinkled various powders and granules around the outside of the house -- to no avail. The ants kept coming.
I visited relatives recently who have been battling ants for years with limited success. No ants. Not one. They've been using Orange Guard for several months. The occasional re-application is needed, but there are NO ants in the house. None. That convinced me as they've had a much worse problem with ants than we ever have. Not any more.
My husband tracked down a supply of Orange Guard a couple of days ago. That took a little time as the local stores have a hard time keeping the stuff in stock. I can understand why. It works.
Orange Guard is water soluble, so if you're using it outdoors, you do have to reapply after a heavy rain, but even the most toxic of pesticides has to be reapplied periodically.
We have seen 2 ants in the house since the first application. A second application took care of those and we've seen none since.
Orange Guard claims to kill fleas, roaches, palmettos, and silverfish in addition to ants. Fortunately, we've had no need to test those claims.
Cautions: There is a warning that it may be hazardous to acquatic invertebrates and another that it is "mildly irritating" if you get it in your eyes. I don't think I'd use it around anyone with a serious citrus allergy
You can buy a 32 ounce spray bottle - we paid about $11 for that. You can also get a gallon bottle for about $20 if you order online. We'll be getting those for refills, but decided it was worth the extra to have it RIGHT NOW and be done with the ants.
Edited to add that the product's active ingredient is orange peel extract.
