susiewho's Full Review: Stuart Woods - Orchid Beach
I received Orchid Beach by Stuart Woods in paperback from a friend who felt it was a pleasant enough, easy read.
The main character, the female lead, Holly Barker is a heroine of enormous proportion. She is extremely well trained according to the book. Holly is CIA, high level, who manages to become a victim repeatedly. She has returned to Vero Beach on a forced leave though, perhaps something to do with a questionable shooting.
She heads to the Vero Beach area, Orchid Beach, where she runs into her former commanding officer,Bruno who is also a predator managing to hide behind his badge. Both she and her friend Laura were attacked by him, another reason she is on leave.
Bruno has a history of rape and attempted rape with Holly as the victim but beacuse of his knowledge of the field and his power position he has eluded punishment. Due to odd circumstances Holly finds herself right back in his clutches.
Both Holly and the other main characters are highly sexually active. Everyone seems to hook up rather fast and repeatedly. Just a heads up.
The serial murders are rather predictable and by the time a few have occurred you begin to figure things out rather quickly. Despite how well trained Holly is she manages to, excuse my expression, screw up a bit and seems oblivious to the fact that one character, Teddy Fay, is a former CIA operative now a rogue operant and dating her best friend. He is a silent assassin who Holly shot at one time , now he is right there having dinner with her, her new beau and her friend, Laurie, also a cop. He has assumed a new identity. This is someone she should definitely be able to recognize, but she only questions all this a bit.
Laurie, another victim of commanding officer Bruno in a rape charge by the former Chief is also now working for him. Odd that anyone attacked by this man would work for him again.
You wonder at Holly's choices when she feels she's being followed. You wonder at how forthcoming she is to the doctor she begins dating. For someone who should be quite discreet in her job she simply is not, within days of meeting her new beau he pretty much knows everything that is going on. Although this is quite predictable it's an easy and entertaining enough read, though, as I said there are a lot of loop holes.
This is the first Woods book I've read and I will look for more of his books. I would recommend it as a light read.
