Oh, Chem!
Written: Nov 23 '99 (Updated Sep 11 '00)
Pros:Easy to read and understand.
Cons:A few errors in the text.
Organic chemistry, by nature, is a tough class. As a pre-med sophomore at a liberal arts college, it's especially difficult. Our school uses Solomons "Organic Chemistry" because it is written with the student in mind. The principles are explained in plain terms and the chapters are divided in a way that prevents "information overload."
From naming organic compounds to identifying reaction mechanisms, this text provides several examples, with no two examples being too similar. Several end-of-the-chapter problems reinforce what the reader investigates in the reading.
This book, on the downside, has a tendency to have the occasional errors, typographical and otherwise, such as Neon's chemical symbol in the back cover periodic table being Co. Otherwise, this book is ideal for college level introductory organic chemistry.
