Pros:Great for those who embrace all things organic.
The Bottom Line: If you are worried about TSS or the compounds that make up your tampons then rejoice, here’s a product just for you.

When I saw the listing for this in the database I almost fell over, not even two weeks ago a few women at a homeschooling fundraiser in my neighborhood were raving about these organic tampons. The first thing that comes to my mind when I hear the word organic is pesticide free fruit or cows that are raised without steroids or enhancers. I was more than a little curious about these after hearing them rant and rave about them so I asked them where I could get a box. I didnt have to wait long to get them in my hands; one of the ladies ran to her mini van, grabbed a bag of them and handed them to me. When she said the words
and they were only six dollars a box
I almost fell over. I pay about half that for the Kotex Security ones and I get twice as many. So much for these being moderately priced but hey, she gave hem to me and refused to accept any cash for them so I wasnt about to pass up on the chance to try them out. Id seen these in the database and the name stuck with me, organic tampons. Thats something that you dont soon forget.
Organic Essentials Certified Organic Cotton Tampons
Wow, that sure is a mouthful.
For once I was actually happy that I got my period. The box was sitting on the shelf for about five days, mocking me
ha, ha, ha, you got me now you cant use me. OK, that might be taking it a bit too far but thats the feeling I got every time I walked past them. I decided to try these out from the start of my period. If you have read any of my other feminine product reviews youll know that Im what they call a heavy bleeder so I have to use the Super or Super Plus size if I want to be able to leave the house for an hour at a time. I was a little worried about the absorbency of these, Id never used any type of organic feminine product before and I didnt know how well they would work. I pushed the boxes of Tampax and Kotex aside, grabbed the box of Organic Essentials and made room in the back of the loo for the box.
When I opened the tampon wrapper it looked like your standard, garden variety tampon. Applicator, string, tampon. Ok, so far so good. I did the deed and sat there waiting. What I was waiting for was beyond me. Maybe a small symphony that would play an angelic song rejoicing that I joined the organic community
maybe I was waiting for it to plop back out. This was uncharted territory for me so I had no idea what was in store. I didnt get to hear a symphony nor did the tampon plop back out. It felt .. well, like nothing which in this case is a good thing. When I start my period Im not that heavy but give it about six hours to kick in and I bleed like a stuck pig. That would be the true test for these, if they could handle the levy when it broke. After the first two days I was down to three tampons so I guess these might be a little more absorbent than the others that I normally use but I could have been bleeding less, thats a hard call.
The box only has sixteen tampons so if you are like me, a heavy bleeder, you will need several boxes each month. At six bucks a box thats a lot of cash to be throwing around on something that gets used for an hour or two then flushed down the drain. But hey, to each his [or in this case her] own. They gave me good protection and didnt leak once but I only got to use them for two days so I cant comment on how well they work for the entire period. I didnt have any type of irritation from them and they were pretty easy to insert and remove, the cord is stitched to the tampon and they are individually wrapped. I started reading about these online and almost everyone had positive comments about them but the price was the one thing that almost everyone complained about. You are paying for the service and since this is a specialty product and there arent a lot of organic tampon makers out there, they can pretty much call the shots where the price is concerned.
There arent cheap. A box of sixteen [yes, 16 tampons] will cost you anywhere from $5.50 to $6.00 a box. Keep in mind you are only getting sixteen of them [that wouldnt last me two days] so plan on spending some serious cash for these. If you are concerned with Toxic Shock Syndrome or have had allergic reactions to rayon [a common fiber used in tampons] then this might be the way to go but if you are really that concerned with it then think about using pads or reusable pads [ones that can be washed].
Things To Know
These tampons are manufactured following the 1990 California Organic Foods Act and are made from 100% cotton [organic cotton] that is processed in a chemical free environment. This is where the wording gets tricky; they are treated with hydrogen peroxide to clean and bleach the cotton but no bleach [chlorine bleach] is used in the process. Organic Essentials notes that their product is free of pesticides, herbicides and is GMO Free [not genetically modified] and this too can be misleading to people. All this means is that the cotton crop was not treated with any type of weed killer and that no enhancers were added to make the crops grow faster. To me these are small scare tactics that people use; they dont come right out and say that other manufacturers are using these materials but they lead you to believe that unless it says that it is pesticide free on the box, then it is.
The Bottom Line
These worked almost as well as the Tampax and Kotex Security tampons but they cost more than twice as much. If I were someone that was overly concerned with how tampons were made or how the material in processed then I might make these a regular pick but until the price comes down on them, I wont be buying any in the near future. They have the same absorbency rating [nine to twelve grams of liquid] as other Super tampons but its the price that will keep these off my shelves. Even if they offered a coupon for a dollar or two off, you are still only getting sixteen per box. If you are concerned with TSS or have allergies then this is a great product but as I said more than a few times, you are paying through the nose for them.
As always, thanks for the read!
