dagny21's Full Review: Organicville Ketchup, No Sugar Added, 24-Ounce (Pa...
Lately I've been trying to eat less sugar. I'm not a person who really craves candy, cake, cookies, or anything like that, so it hasn't been too difficult for me to decrease my sugar intake. However, I really do have a sweet tooth when it comes to things like condiments, dressings, and marinades. My favorite barbecue sauce is ridiculously sweet, my favorite salad dressing is a honey and bacon french flavor, and I can't live without ketchup.
I don't think I could stand to change brands of barbecue sauce or salad dressing without feeling like I was sacrificing too much. But, ketchup is ketchup, right? So, when I saw this no sugar added Organicville Ketchup I thought it might be worth giving it a try.
What's In It? Organicville Ketchup contains the following: organic tomato puree, organic Agave Nectar (for sweetness), organic white vinegar, salt, organic onion powder, and organic spices (unspecified).
What's the Difference? Our usual brand of ketchup is Heinz. The serving sizes on each bottle are listed as 1T. The total Carbohydrates in 1T of Heinz is 4 grams, and it's the same in the organic. The Heinz contains 4 grams of sugar per serving, and this sugar comes from both high fructose corn syrup and regular corn syrup. The Organicville ketchup has 3 grams of sugars, and it's all from Agave Nectar. If you're concerned about sodium, there is a lot less sodium in the Organicville brand (125mg versus the 190mg in the Heinz). In terms of calories, the Organicville brand is higher, with 20 calories per serving as opposed to only 15 in the Heinz.
Agave Nectar? Agave is the plant from which tequila is made. So, as far as I'm concerned, the agave is all right! Kidding aside, we all know consuming high fructose corn syrup is supposed to be pretty bad for you, and there's some evidence that Agave Nectar is actually pretty good for you. Regardless, it's likely to be a lot better for you than corn syrup or white sugar.
Taste, Texture, and Color My son, who does not like ketchup anyway, was eager to taste this because he thought it might taste better than regular ketchup. He stuck his finger in and declared it "just the same, so yuck." When I poured out my first little puddle of Organicville Ketchup to eat with a serving of homemade sweet potato fries, the first thing I noticed was the color. This ketchup is a lot darker red than regular ketchup. It's also a little thicker and almost has a grainy look on the plate, although when you eat it, there's no grainy texture. As for flavor, it does taste different than regular ketchup to me. There is less tang and a little more sweetness. Some may be bothered by this, some may not notice the difference. There is definitely a difference, and at first I noticed it and was tempted to go back to my old ketchup. But, now that I have grown accustomed to it, I actually prefer it.
Final Thoughts I'm not the type of person to buy into the next trendy food thing. I bought this because I'm trying to eat less of things like corn syrup, I don't like the flavor of Splenda sweetened things, and I've never thought artificial sweeteners were a healthy choice. Since ketchup is something I use several times a week, I feel like cutting out the regular ketchup and going with the Organicville is definitely progress.
