And so my eternal quest for the most perfect scent continues, this time landing me at the Origins counter with Ginger Essence in hand. Whereas most of my searches are aimed at finding a thick, musky fragrance my goal this time around was to locate a unique, light, fruity, summery one. Ginger Essence pretty much satisfies me on every level.
Is it a complex fragrance? Nope. Certainly, the name would imply some sort of tendency toward oriental or gingerbut the fact is that neither could be further from the trust. I suppose that it could possibly be characterized as ginger. But my nose detects something distinctly citrus and fresh about the fragrance. Lemon, lime, and bergamot are all notable tones. In fact, between the three any hint of ginger is pretty much forgotten. What is left is a near-perfect summer scent.
But Ginger Essence is not perfect. Certainly the price is a draw, with a retail price at Origins stores and counters of a mere $35 for 1.7oz. But the price is certainly indicative of the staying power of the product. I spray it on. It smells wonderful. Twenty minutes later, all I can smell is the scent of my rain fresh deodorant. Certainly, Origins could have done a much better job at making their scent stick. It really is no more potent than the usual drugstore perfume. And for the price (as minimal as it is for the usual makeup counter), I did indeed expect something at least averagely lasting.
And even as much as I do in fact like it immediately, it is not something I can always wear. Im easily bored by what turns out to be a rather run-of-the-mill citrus fragrance. Ginger Essence really could have been a lot better. I expected more, and while standing within the clearly intoxicating walls of the Origins store I truly and honestly believed it to be something special. Ginger Essence not only lacks sticking power, it also lacks depth. I enjoy fragrances with a multitude of layers. Something that maybe on the surface smells like lemons, but just beneath hints of powder or musk hide. This is simply one dimensional and bland.
Ginger Essence smells fine enough, but it is in the end a waste of money. For more lasting but equally as alluring citrus scents look toward ones like Happy (Clinique), Green Tea (Elizabeth Arden), Cool Water (Davidoff), Lucky You (Lucky Brand), or Allure (Chanel). There really are a lot of options
my main suggestion is to simply clean out your nose and head on over to the nearest Sephora WITHOUT your checkbook. Sample them all, choose your poison wisely and then head back home and hop online. Online, you can get just about any scent for tens of dollars cheaper.
