| darkchild99's Full Review: Origins Have A Nice Day |
Now that we're entering spring Down Under everyone's pulling out the sunscreen and heading down to the beach. Australia is one of the countries where SPF is literally compulsory, not just to avoid photo-ageing. And the hole in our southern hemisphere ozone doesn't help. Everyone who comes down to Australia for a holiday learns that leaving the house without an SPF will get you burnt in under twenty minutes. We're bombarded with information about skin cancer from primary school. All schools provide free sun cream and everyone has to Slip, Slop and Slap before going out (slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen and slap on a hat). It's a national motto. In the spirit of saving my skin and still getting some of my daily vitamin D I turned to trusty Origins for a protection solution. The SPF 15 in Have A Nice Day was definitely the hook for me.
It didn't hurt that this moisturiser was packed with vitamins, minerals and botanicals to help revive and smooth my skin. After using the sample that I received from my local Origins store for a week I was pretty much sold. Coming from a Portugese-Indian background means that I don't burn easy to start with, but knowing that I've got an SPF 15 on my face makes me feel a lot better. I currently own three Origins moisturisers - Balanced Diet, Matte Scientist and Have A Nice Day Lotion. I use them alternately to deal with my skin's different issues but what I would really love would be if Origins put an SPF into Matte Scientist because it's my secret favourite! Unfortunately, I don't think that this will be happening and so Have a Nice Day will have to do.
The Product
The Have A Nice Day Lotion comes in a 1.7 fl. oz (50 ml) pale apple-green glass bottle with a darker green and white label. The bottle is partner to the Night-A-Mins Lotion, both are shaped like vitamin bottles with a white screw-on lid. I'm predicting that the shape of the bottle will make it difficult to pour the last of the lotion out when I'm finishing this product but for now it's not a problem. The actual lotion has a lovely texture, it's not as runny as Balanced Diet and Matte Scientist but it's not thick like the Night-A-Mins cream. When I put it on my face it's never too heavy and leaves my skin feeling like satin. The product is a very pale yellow, creamy colour when you pour it out of the bottle and it spreads evenly.
I love the scent of this lotion! It's absolutely gorgeous and very energising in the mornings. The top note of grapefruit is unmistakable and infuses the product with a sense of optimism. The lotion contains a number of botanical ingredients that probably also contribute to the scent. I was told by the SA at the Origins counter that HAND is best used in the mornings because of the SPF and also because the essential oils in it were chosen specifically as a 'wake up' call for the daytime. Night-A-Mins is best for evening use because the aroma is relaxing and promotes sleep. I believe that the scent of a product is very significant in deciding whether you like it. An important tip is that a woman's sense of smell is heightened during 'that time of the month' and that's when it's best to shop for fragrances and facial products.
Product Hype: Your skin hasn't a care in the world when stimulating Gingko Extract, radiance-reviving Licorice, firming White Birch extract, nourishing Soybean plus potent UV protectors fortify it with everything it needs to face the day. Vitamin E stops environmental no-goodniks. Skin runs smoothly sun up to sun down. And one whiff of the gung-ho Grapefruit aroma gives you a sense of can-do optimism.

My Experience
This 'super-charged' lotion is an undeniably good moisturiser but it isn't a miracle worker. At least, not for me. I have several friends who all swear by it and I have to admit that it does an excellent job of hydrating my skin while never leaving me with residue or a greasy feel. HAND certainly doesn't put a foot wrong. However, it doesn't exactly break the barriers either. Today, women are looking for multi-tasking products because we have to be multi-tasking people. We want a product that smoothes, hydrates, fades spots, clarifies, brightens, fights wrinkles, retexturises, protects, prevents further ageing and energises. At the same time we know that such a product may never be invented because some of these tasks have different positions in our skin routine.
HAND comes close but just doesn't hit the mark for me. I have been pleasantly surprised and delighted with many of Origins' products and I still plan to use Have A Nice Day this summer but I don't find it one of my 'wooh!' products. It's more one of my 'mmmm' products, it makes me feel good about my skin and I know that wearing it is good for my skin. In the mornings my first step is to cleanse with Origins Never A Dull Moment cleanser. I then smooth on Lauder's Idealist and let it seep into my pores before applying Have A Nice Day. On really hot days I find that even HAND can seem too heavy and I'll opt for Matte Scientist and my Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser SPF 20 instead. One thing I am 'woohing' is that HAND never made me break out once! I guess I'll just be biding my time until I find something better.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
I think that this review is already permeated with my feelings about the SPF in this product. Fortunately, most skincare lines are realising the importance of SPF and it's popping up in most products. While there is a lot of literature arguing over whether many of the botanicals and vitamins in facial products actually do anything, all dermatologists agree that the best thing you can do for your skin is wear a minimum SPF 15 before leaving the house. Basically your SPF lengthens the amount of time that your skin normally goes without burning. An SPF of 15 means that you would take 15 times as long to burn as you would without an SPF at all. Therefore people with more melanin (and darker skin) still need SPF to screen out harmful UVA and UVB rays. Unfortunately the higher the SPF of a product, the heavier and greasier it is (bad news for oily-combi people!).
Finally, a product whose price tag cracked me. In previous reviews I have mentioned that I am willing to fork out quite a bit of money if the product meets my needs. However, Have A Nice Day made me realise that just meeting my needs isn't enough. I think that a product really has to have a little something special for me to open my wallet. This time the SPF 15 was enough, and luckily a little of this lotion goes a long way, but next time I might opt for something cheaper. I love the scent, the texture and the sun protection but the price for this small bottle forced me to take a star off this rating. I wish that I could love this product more, I want to love this product more but it's just not happening and I can't really put my finger on the underlying reason, except for the hideous pricetag.
The Verdict
Although the product doesn't control my oil issues it doesn't seem to contribute to them either, which is great. I have discovered that most skincare brands don't have oil-control moisturisers with SPF because of the heavy consistency of UV protectors. However, if you hunt around it is possible to find a light moisturiser for combination skins with a reasonable sun protection factor. It doesn't get much better than Origin's Have A Nice Day Lotion. This product is for women who care about protecting their skin from photo-ageing. In terms of hydration, it isn't necessary to re-apply this product because it is adequate for the day. However, in terms of sun protection, creams with SPF 15 need to be reapplied every two to three hours.
I enjoy using HAND lotion in the mornings and I love the way it leaves my skin feeling smooth and hydrated. I'm glad that I bought Origins Have A Nice Day Lotion because it does meet my skin's needs and it's a joy to use. Origins have managed to find the perfect balance between cream and runny lotion for this product. So, who should buy this product? If you're looking for a great product that combines hydration with protection then this is it. In addition, there is a cream version of the product that tailors to drier skintypes. If your skin is very oily I wouldn't recommend using Have A Nice Day as it may be too rich. The claims of this product packs a punch and I feel confident stepping out into the sun when I'm wearing HAND. Origins makes me feel happy and optimistic about my day with this lotion on my face!
