| melissasrn's Full Review: Origins Matte Scientist |
Over the years, I have avoided using moisturizers like the plague because I truly believed that they would only contribute to the oily shine my acne prone skin loves to produce in excess on a daily basis no matter what month of the year we are currently into. But as I was making my first online purchase at www.origins.com a few months ago (FREE shipping on your first order, everyone!), I saw an oil controlling lotion that I had heard only good things about from other more experienced Epinions Beauty writers who already used this fine product as part of their skin care regime. Bearing a rather unusual name that makes this particular beauty choice quite difficult to forget, Origins Matte Scientist was placed into my online shopping cart and arrived at my door a few days later. And from the first time I tried this oil controlling moisturizing lotion out, the way my face looks and feels has not been the same since.
~~~The Product~~~
Origins Matte Scientist is an oil controlling lotion containing Salicylic Acid that moisturizes oily skin without causing breakouts. According to the package advertising: Watch and feel as natural science performs a major mattification while giving moisture-phobic faces the healthy dose of oil-free hydration they need to feel fresh and smooth, not dried out. The latest advances: Phlorogine (from seaweed) subtracts surplus shine and keeps even the most oil-rich skins in check. Sage super-purifies. Jewelweed Nectar helps negate irritating substances. Won't smother skin. Won't clog pores. This oil control lotion does not contain sunscreen like many other skin care products now do, so perhaps using a foundation containing an SPF 15 factor, such as Origins Nude and Improved bare face makeup, might be preferred instead. This oil control lotion itself has a distinct Eucalyptus fragrance that is quite pleasant actually and not overbearing at all. It is creamy white in color and is somewhat thin in consistency, which makes the application process rather simple as this moisturizer smooths over the face with ease. Skin is left hydrated and refreshed yet never greasy feeling when Origins Matte Scientist is used on a daily basis.
~~~Packaging & Price~~~
Each 1.7 ounce (50 ml) small glass green tinted bottle of Origins Matte Scientist may be purchased at the Origins counter of your favorite fine department store or online at www.origins.com for a rather hefty $18.50. But keep in mind that like with other similar Origins products, a little goes a long way to provide effective results. I've been using mine on a daily basis for 2 to 3 months now and my first bottle is still half-full. The recyclable glass bottle with the white screw on lid is somewhat simple yet classy in appearance, but be careful as it would be very easy to spill this lotion if dropped as the opening is quite large. Printed in plain green print across the front is the Origins logo and this 4 inch bottle takes up little space on my bathroom counter, which is a good thing as I have plenty other similar skin care products lined up for use within reach! While I'm not 100% sure what the name implies (anyone know?), Origins Matte Scientist doubles as both a light moisturizer as well as controlling excess oil production to both reduce shine and decrease the number and severity of breakouts that ultimately occur.
~~~Directions for Use~~~
The packaging directions found on the side of each bottle of Origins Matte Scientist are quite simple: Apply over cleansed skin morning and evening. Avoid eye area. After first applying a thin layer or Origins A Perfect World White Tea Skin Guardian to my bare, clean face and allowing it to dry, I will smooth a small amount of this oil controlling lotion all over my facial skin with my fingertips and allow this thin layer to dry as well before any make-up is applied. Any tightness felt in my skin beforehand disappears instantly and there is just enough light moisturizing to keep my face feeling fresh yet non-greasy all day long. And the Salicylic Acid contained in this oil control lotion penetrates my pores to prevent future breakouts from occurring. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that my oily skin would tolerate even a light moisturizing product such as this one without aggravating my acne prone skin, but Origins Matte Scientist has successfully proven to me that even oily skin types need moisture too! For I actually have fewer breakouts now than ever before, which is quite an accomplishment for me since I've tried just about every over-the-counter acne preparation there is with only limited success over the years.
~~~Overall Recommendation~~~
Stop avoiding moisturizers such as I did if you have oily skin and give Origins Matte Scientist a try today and be pleasantly surprised at the dramatic results just as I have been. While this oil control lotion provides light hydration, it also helps to decrease oil production, especially in these warm weather months when our oil glands tend to rev up into overdrive. The fragrance is quite pleasant and this lotion is very simple to apply both day and night, so the only cons I have found to date is its higher initial price and possibly the glass packaging. Say goodbye to irritating redness, dryness, and/or tightness that occurs when other topical medications designed for oily skin are used. And then say hello to a smoother, softer face featuring less breakouts and less oily shine. So in summary, Origins Matte Scientist is yet one more highly recommended Origins skin care product designed for oily skin types that I plan on using well into the future for many months or even years to come.
