Origins Pure Cream: Neo is "The One", but is this cleanser?

Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:doesn't dry my skin, reasonably priced, removes mascara, tube is travel-friendly

Cons:the smell's not for everyone, jar is made of glass

The Bottom Line: Overall, I would buy this again - it does what I need it to, and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg!

Hi, My name is Missy and I am a beauty product junkie. There, I've said it. :) Welcome to my very first Epinions review!

For the past few years, I've been looking for that ultimate facial cleanser. You know, the one you HAVE to have...if they ever quit making it, you'd have to buy 50 of them so you'd be stocked up. Unfortunately, my search got a little harder this time last year, because my skin went from combination to more normal-dry. My skin was doing just fine, I seemed to have a routine that worked well enough, then it seems to change almost overnight. I went from having skin that was soft and comfortable (albeit shiny and slightly oily) and only needed moisturizer during the winter, to skin that's now on the drier side, sometimes flaky cheeks, and needs moisturizer every day! So now I'm looking for a cleanser for normal-dry skin, because combination skin products just dry my skin out too much. I'm not sure I can count the number of products I've tried just in the past six months: Neutrogena, Oil of Olay, Nivea, Kiehl's, Biore, and before buying Pure Cream, I was using Cetaphil and/or Clean & Clear cream cleanser. It got to where Cetaphil didn't seem moisturizing enough, so off to the mall I went in search of yet another product!

Actually, I didn't originally intend to buy anything from Origins. I went to the mall with the intention of getting a sample of Lancome's Milky Creme Cleanser. I was told by the saleswoman at Lancome's counter that they didn't have samples available. "Fine, then" I thought, "If they don't want or need my business that bad, then I'll go to Clinique." Well guess what? I ask about two of the so-called "cleansers" at the Clinique counter, only to be told that those are "only" makeup removers, and I'd have to buy the soap to actually cleanse my face. Okay, a big rant here. Cleanser has a key word in it - CLEAN! Why Clinique touts several of their products (not only on the packaging itself, but also on their website) as cleansers if that's not what they actually do is beyond me. Screw the 3-Step System, it's actually 4 steps. (Oh yeah, Clinique also doesn't have samples, I've asked them before). So off I go again. I also know that Aveda doesn't have samples, so I just skipped them altogether. What is wrong with these companies?!? Anyway, I decided to try Origins. I used their Checks & Balances while my skin was still combination, and I knew they had a couple of products for dry skin. And reasonable prices - a big plus in my book!

After I walked in the store, one of the sales ladies at Origins asked if she could assist with helping me find something, but they didn't hound me, which is nice. After checking out the Pure Cream and the Liquid Crystal (I think that's the right name), I decided to buy a tube of the Pure Cream. The tube is 3.4 fl oz (100 ml), and costs 10 bucks. They also sell this stuff in a 6.7 fl oz (200 ml) jar (I believe it's still a glass jar) for $16.50. Personally, I chose the tube because I planned on using this in the shower. I didn't want to take a chance of having a glass jar in the shower, dropping it, getting shards of glass in my foot, grabbing my foot screaming in pain, then falling because I lose my balance, and possibly getting glass stuck in other areas of my body that I'd really rather not have glass in! Not to mention that if you dropped the glass jar, your money would literally be going down the drain, seeing as the water would wash away all the cleanser (unless you're really quick and have some way of scooping it all up).

By now you're probably thinking "shut up already and tell me about the product itself!" Okay. The tube states that Pure Cream is a rinseable cleanser that you can also tissue off. I can't attest to how well it tissues off, seeing as I haven't tried it that way. Here's what the back of the tube says: "Emollient-rich Carrot Oil plus kindly cleansers cream away makeup, dirt and moisture-stealing debris, while Hibiscus and Rose soothe skin to leave it thoroughly comfortable." Now the Carrot Oil is listed about halfway down the ingredients, so I don't know how much is actually in there. I'm not quite sure exactly what this smells like to me, it almost seems like a floral-y combination of mint and citrus. This is definitely a cream cleanser - no lather, no foam, nada. The fact that it doesn't lather is a plus for me, because products that foam tend to dry my skin out. If you like facial cleansers that foam, then this is not the cleanser for you. I thought this would be similar to a cream cleanser like Neutrogena, but the consistency is more like a thicker facial lotion. I've been using the Pure Cream morning and night for about a week now, and while I'm not sure yet if it's "the one" (I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I'll never find a perfect cleanser), it does make my skin feel softer and smoother. I've been using it in conjunction with my sample of Origin's Have a Nice Day facial lotion.

A couple of the other reviews here have complained about makeup removal - or lack thereof - while using this product. Personally, I haven't experienced that problem. For the record, I use Maybelline's Great Wear concealer, Cover Girl Simply Powder foundation, and occasionally eyeshadow, powder eyeliner, and (usually waterproof) mascara. I never use a toner or astringent, but I have a couple of nights, just to see how well this does remove makeup. There was a very minute trace of makeup/dirt on the cotton ball, but Cetaphil does the same thing, so I don't hold it against this product. If you use one of those all-day type foundations, Pure Cream might not be strong enough to remove that...I don't know for sure. Surprisingly, it does remove all my eye makeup really well, however as I found out last night, it does sting if you get this stuff in your eyes, so you might want to use a separate eye makeup remover! Using a washcloth to wipe your face off, then rinsing, seems to help makeup removal.

A side note about Origins. After my lack of success in acquiring samples from the above mentioned companies, I didn't expect Origins to provide me with anything either. I'd read some good reviews here on the Have a Nice Day facial lotion, so when I was paying for my purchases, I asked the sales lady if she happened to have any samples of the lotion. She said she didn't have any readily available, but she'd make one up real quick. I imagine the samples usually are a bit larger and in different packaging, but she did give me a small plastic bottle with a small amount of the lotion in it. Yay, now that's customer service! The ladies at Lancome, Clinique and Aveda should take notes!

Here's the list of ingredients, in case you want to know: Aqueous (water, aqua purificata, purified) infusions; hibiscus sabdariffa (hibiscus), rosa damascena (rose), melilotus officinalis (melilot), octyl hydroxystearate, cyclomethicone, bis-diglyceryl polyacyladipate-2, sorbitol, glyceryl stearate, cetearyl alcohol, coriandrum sativum (coriander), picea (spruce) needles, citrus auranrifolia (lime) peel, mentha piperita (peppermint pays), citrus reticulata (mandarin) fruit and citrus reticulata (tangerine) peel, essential oils (olea), daucus carota sativa (carrot) oil, stearyl alcohol, ceteareth-20, isocetyl stearate, potassium carbomer, carbomer, disodium edta, potassium sorbate, phenoxyethanol, methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben.

You can buy Origins in the cosmetics department of some major department stores, or your local mall might have an Origins store. You can also buy products online at www.origins.com.

Thanks for reading! :)
