| st3rlite's Full Review: Origins Spot Remover |
Going through yet another massive breakout period, I did some research, read some reviews, and decided to rush out to Grace Bros and buy Origins Spot Remover.
What is it
Spot remover is a local acne treatment. It comes in a tiny 10ml squeezable bottle. It is a clear gel with salicylic acid as its active ingredient. The consistency is rather thick and slightly sticky if you apply too much.
Directions for use - as stated on the packaging
Cleanse skin thoroughly before applying. Cover the entire affected area with one application daily. Gradually increase to 2 or 3 times daily if needed or as directed by a doctor. If bothersome dryness or peeling occurs, reduce application to every other day.
How I used it
The day i bought it I had a couple of small and a couple of major blemishes. I straight away dabbed it on, about 2 applications at one time, allowing a few minutes for each layer to dry before applying the second.
Research on other people's experiences
Most of the time I will spend a good few hours reading reviews from everywhere I can find on a product. Here are the main comments I found, and my experiences in relation to each.
Opinion: Spot remover causes excessive dryness and peeling
True! I found that if you apply the spot remover more than once a day on your spot, it will cause dryness and peeling around the blemish. Mind you, although it says to apply direct to the blemish, you just can't help to get the stuff on the skin around the blemish as well. In my desperation I would sometimes apply up to 3 layers at one time. After a few hours I would have a crater of skin peel right around the whole blemish - not a good look!
But on the positive side, if it dries skin that much it definately means its working to dry the blemish. And Ive found smaller blemishes dry up quicker, although larger ones take awhile longer.
Opinion: Spot remover burns your skin!
False. I have very sensitive eczema prone skin. If you apply as directed, dabbing the gel onto your blemishes, you shouldn't feel any burning sensation. Of course if the skin is broken - as a result of peeling, or extractions, then it does burn and sting a little bit. But unless you are applying a huge amount of this stuff, or are allergic to salicylic acid, it shouldn't burn a hole through the top layer of skin or anything.
Opinion: Spot remover stinks!
True. Alot of people complained about the smell. Sure it is strong, but I don't think it is that offensive, or maybe I'm just used to these strong medicinal smells of acne treatments. This is a cross between medicine and herbs!
Opinion: Spot remover removes whiteheads
False. For me this did nothing to my whiteheads at all. Didn't seem to dry them up enough to pick them off or anything, they just remained the same.
Opinion: Spot remover removes pimples
True after about 2 days. I never had instant over night results like some other people did. But I certainly noticed a drying action and reduction in size, particularly in older pimples.
Opinion: Spot remover removes cystic acne
False to an extent. It doesnt seem to work on larger deeper acne in the same way. But I did find that if you can apply it soon enough before the acne has fully developed, it will dry the area enough to at least minimise full development.
Opinion: Spot remover is an effective treatment
True. If applied locally, it does help get rid of pimples that have already developed. It is certainly not a preventative measure nor is it an overnight miracle product in my opinion, but it does help lessen the life of acne.
