Pros:gently removes makeup, even stubborn eye makeup; doesn’t dry my skin/clog pores/cause breakouts

Cons:not exactly cheap; strong scent; bottle is cumbersome

The Bottom Line: The last thing in the world I thought I’d want or need, but I really like how it gently & thoroughly removes makeup (even eye makeup) without irritating my skin.

Before Christmas, I placed an order online from www.origins.com because my Origins Pinch Your Cheeks was running low. To thank me for my business (and no doubt to entice me to order more stuff from them), Origins sent me a bunch of special offers & coupon codes. Well, their marketing strategy worked on me, because I took advantage of every offer they sent me, and I now have a quite a little collection of Origins products. One of the winners in my book is Origins Clean Energy Gentle Cleansing Oil.

I’ve been reading a lot about cleansing oils in beauty & fashion magazines over the last year or two. Despite all the raves from beauty editors, I had my doubts about using oil to cleanse my skin. Now, my skin is pretty normal, even a little on the dry side now that it’s winter time, but the thought of putting oil on my skin made me envision monster breakouts and oil slicks. But my curiosity got the best of me, so I broke down and gave Origins Clean Energy Gentle Cleansing Oil a try. Even though $17.50 was more than I like to spend for facial cleanser, it was still considerably less than other cleansing oils from other brands.

Here is the product description from www.origins.com

A healthier looking future for skin begins here. This lightweight, high-tech, hybrid formula with non-comedogenic, Olive, Sunflower, Sesame and Safflower Oils removes dirt, makeup and pollutants with high efficiency. Kukui Nut and Macadamia help protect precious natural moisture resources. Vitamin E helps reduce effects of environmental hazards such as irritation that can threaten the comfort of skin. Skin breathes freely. And the energizing aroma of Grapefruit, Orange and Lemon renew your spirits.

6.7 fl. oz./200 ml $17.50

I am not going to list the ingredients, since they’re printed in tiny green print, and against the golden color of the oil it’s nearly impossible to read. . The ingredients list is quite long, and it contains lots of natural oils. I was a bit wary of using this on my sensitive eye area, since I know sometimes natural oils & extracts can be irritants but I’m pleased to report this has not irritated my sensitive eyes or eye area. It does have a very strong scent, that I’m not fond of. It has a familiar scent (and its driving me crazy that I can’t place it) that smells kind of herbal and citrusy. Thankfully, the scent fades within about 5 minutes of washing it off my face.

Origins Clean Energy Gentle Cleansing Oil comes in a clear plastic bottle with a white screw-on lid. It contains 6.7 oz. of product. The oil itself looks just like olive oil. To use it, I unscrew the cap and pour about a half-dollar sized amount into the palm of my hand. I’m not crazy about pouring the product out of the dime-sized opening, because it’s easy to pour out way too much. It is also a bit of a hassle because I screw the lid back on right away, for fear of knocking over the bottle and literally having seventeen dollar’s worth of product go down the drain. I’ve read elsewhere that Origins sells a pump dispenser for an additional dollar (a worthwhile investment, in my opinion) but I did not see it available online, and I do not have an Origins store or counter anywhere near me. I’m still on the lookout for any pump-dispenser that fits the top of the bottle.

I dip my fingertips into the pool of oil in the palm of my hand, and gently massage Origins Clean Energy Gentle Cleansing Oil on my eyelid for about 10 seconds. Then I repeat for the other eyelid. Then I rub what’s left in my palms together, and rub it into the rest of my face. I apply this to dry skin, and the feeling of the oil against my skin has a bit of a warming sensation. It feels kinds of relaxing, like a little face massage. Then I splash my face with some warm water, and the oil turns into a milky consistency. I splash my face about 10 times or so, until I feel all of it has been rinsed away.

After rinsing, my skin looks and feels clean. It even removes layers of eye makeup (primer, powder or cream eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, even waterproof mascara) thoroughly and without irritation (though I like to go over my eye area with a damp cool cotton ball, to make sure all traces of oil are gone). It don’t ever use toner so I can’t tell you if any traces of makeup or oil remain on my skin, but it seems to do a thorough job of cleansing to me. My skin also feels very soft and smooth. It does not look or feel oily at all, but it does not feel tight or dry, as it will after using some other cleansers. I always follow with my regular eye cream and facial moisturizer. Having used Origins Clean Energy Gentle Cleansing Oil for over a month, now, I can say it has not caused breakouts or an increase in oil. It leaves my skin clean and well-balanced.

I have used about 1/3 of the bottle. To stretch it out a little longer, recently I’ve been using a smaller amount to remove only my eye makeup, and using a different facial cleanser for the rest of my face. I do like that this is a multi-tasking product that eliminates the need of an additional eye makeup remover. I will likely purchase Origins Clean Energy Gentle Cleansing Oil again when I run out.

The bottom line is I do recommend Origins Clean Energy Gentle Cleansing Oil if you have normal to dry skin and you’re looking for a gentle, multi-tasking cleanser. Cleansing with oil is a unique experience, though I don’t think the product and experience will appeal to everyone. If you’re curious about cleansing oils as I was, Origins Clean Energy Gentle Cleansing Oil is a reasonably priced option that surprised me in its effectiveness.

Origins Clean Energy Gentle Cleansing Oil is available at Origins stores and at larger department stores that have an Origins counter. It is available online at www.origins.com and www.gloss.com. It costs $17.50. Origins products rarely go on sale (although I’m a registered member of their website, and they sent me a Friends & Family offer before Christmas that allowed me to take 25% off of all my purchases), but if you take advantage of special promotions or gift-with-purchase offers, that can help offset the cost.
