| DeRango's Full Review: Ortho Grass-B-Gon Grass Killer |
It has to be *Murphys Law for my lawn, where ever I feed and water, it dies and struggles, but if I spray and pull, it grows and thrives. So when do we consider grass a weed? Well when it is growing in my flowers, shrubs, and landscape area, and yet you would assume it grows so well in these unwanted areas that I was doing something wrong.
Recently I purchased my own place, and along with this property came the responsibility of maintaining a decent looking landscape. Honestly it is almost impossible to maintain that perfect landscape, if your yard has not succumb to drought then it most likely has been exposed to infestations of weeds and insects. The point is that when you try to grow something as gorgeous as a flower, you want it to look absolutely pristine, and no grass or other vegetation should be allowed to stand in all your gardens glory.
Product Specifications

-Won't harm landscape plants Guaranteed!
-Use in and around groundcovers, flowers, landscapes and shrubs.
-Ready-to-use (no mixing or measuring)

How to Use
-Ready-to-use; no mixing required
-Make two applications 7 days apart for tough-to-control weeds
-Avoid drift to non-labeled plants
Specifically: Hold sprayer close to weed (1-2ft) with spray nozzle aimed at weed and away from face and spray to wet foliage. Make two applications 7 days apart for tough-to-control weedy grasses such as established Bermudagrass, annual bluegrass, quackgrass, St.Augustine grass etc.
When to Apply
Apply anytime weeds are actively growing.
Do not mow or cut off tops of weeds before spraying.
Growth of treated grasses stops soon after application. They will turn yellow and die within 1 to 4 weeks. Cool weather slows activity.
Where to Use
For use around ornamentals, ground covers, evergreens and shrubs
What It Controls
Kills Bermudagrass, annual bluegrass, barnyardgrass, quackgrass, and many other annual and perennial grasses
Active Ingredients:
0.48% Fluazifop-P-Butyl
Other Inactive Ingredients 99.52% (HA), so basically Im paying 6 bucks fro .48% of the bottle Im using. Sounds about Right though, Most people I talked to while working retail seemed to use about that much of their brain.
Improvement Needed
The products claims of not harming Landscape Plants which can be somewhat falsified as it has a list of plants that it can, no better yet will harm. If accidental contact comes with the plants leaves wash off immediate with water, which does not sound like Guaranteed to not harm ornamental plants. I found that trying to spray grass growing clustered within the flowers and roots of a plant can be quite a challenge. I felt like I was so concerned with not getting the product on the plant, almost feeling as if I failed to do a good job of spraying the grass growing around it.
It was a bit frustrating because the effects of the herbicide could be noticed a few days later on the areas that I had sprayed near my flowers I was trying desperately to protect. I followed the instructions as best as possible, but seeing the product claimed to not harm landscape plants, I felt almost cheated that I had to be overcautious in areas where grass was clustered in with the flower and stems.
To kill undesirable weedy grasses growing around the truck or up through the foliage of the following plants, spray directly on the weeds, avoiding the desirable plant foliage as much as possible. Then it goes on to say it is generally tolerable or usually wont harm, which to me is a cop-out for saying it can or will harm. If a product claims Wont then it shouldnt, bottom line
Well
After the second application, the grass did begin to die off, however it wasnt without cost, some of the flowers were discolored and worse the leaves started to brown. Luckily I used Miracle grow, and vigorously watered and watched over and they began to recover. Even though the product eventually worked, I would have rather not had the scare of seeing some my plants wilt and wither.
Conclusion
Although the product did work to some extent, I would caution its use, and for the amount of money I spent, I sprayed a 60 X 3 foot area twice, with mixed results of success.
