Pros:Easy to apply, fairly priced "medicine" for our landscape plantings
Cons:Check directions before applying to fruits and vegetables.
The Bottom Line: Fairly priced insurance in limiting or eliminating a host of diseases on turf, ornamentals, vegetables, fruit trees and shrubs
This product has been recently re-named by Ortho. Once known as Ortho Multi-Purpose Fungicide (Daconil 2787), it is now known as Ortho® Garden Disease Control and listed as such on both the website and on product currently available for sale.

Even though I spend plenty of time outdoors from spring to fall around the yard, I've only recently discovered this fungicide to aid in keeping landscape healthy. This product is widely known as a proven broad-spectrum liquid fungicide for use on listed fruit trees, roses, flowers, vegetables, turf and shrubs. My original concern was the red twig dogwoods in our front yard. Each summer, the leaves would begin to spot with dark brown spots, eventually by late summer, 75% of the foliage had dropped or become severely browned.
Following a bit of research, it became evident to me these bushes were falling victim to septoria leafspot. Last year I began treating these shrubs with this product with some success. The leafspot was more limited than previous years so I considered the initial experiment with Ortho Multi-Purpose Fungicide (Daconil 2787) should continue this season. I attributed my somewhat limited success to the fact that I began treatment after leaf spotting had already appeared. This season I began treatment much earlier in hope that total elimination of leafspot would be this year's result. Due to a damp, cool spring and a late bloom as well as an extremely busy schedule, I was still a bit slow with my first application. Thus far, I have noticed a minimal amount of spotting, far less than previous years in which severe spotting would have been quite evident by mid to late July.
I have also began using this product on a variety of other plants including pieris, roses, holly, juniper and euonymus. Application of Ortho Multi-Purpose Fungicide (Daconil 2787) in conjuction with proper feeding has helped liven up a number of plants. The pieris in particular have been susceptible to phytophthora die-back causing loss of entire shoots or portions of plants. Thus far this season, the plants look stronger than previous years with no new loss of shoots.
In general, this fungicide is formulated to control a wide variety of diseases including rust, leaf spot, blights, anthracnose, powdery mildew, fruit and root rots. Additionally, many common lawn diseases including brown patch, leaf spots, melting out, red thread, dollar spot, rust may also be controlled by applying per the manufacturer's directions.
Below is a list of ornamentals Ortho suggests for use with this product as well as some of the diseases Daconil will aid in fighting specific to each type of plant:
Cercospora, Cercosporidium, Cylindrosporium leafspots
Ovulinia flower blight
Leaf blotch, Anthracnose
Cherry B Laurel
Scab, Cedar-apple rust, Sphaeropsis leafspot
Flowering Almond, Quince, Sand Cherry
Monilinia blossom/branch blight
Rust, Fabraea leafspot
Rhizoctonia web blight
Oak (red group only)
Taphrina blister, Actinopelte leafspot, Anthracnose
Oregon B Grape (Mahonia)
Photinia Fabraea (Entomosporium)
Ortho also recommends the use of this fungicide on the following Bulbs and flowering plants: Carnation, Chrysanthemum/Daisy, Geranium, Gladiolus, Hollyhock, Hydrangea* (foliage only), Iris, Lily, Petunia*, Rose, Statice and Zinnia.
Ortho Multi-Purpose Fungicide (Daconil 2787) is also recommended on a number of foliage plants including Dracaena, Pachysandra, Leatherleaf fern and Philodendron to name several.
Needlecast, brown spot and canker problems may also be controlled with this product on a variety of conifers including pine, Douglas fir and spruce. Unfortunately for purposes of this review I can't speak to the effectiveness of this product on evergreens, as those in out yard have never experienced any of these health issues to date.
Fruit trees as well as vegetables may also benefit from this product as well. A number of vegetables and fruit trees are also prone to a number of the listed diseases such as scab and blight, fruit rot, leaf spot as well as mold and mildews. For use on fruits and vegetables, I recommend reading the attached instructions carefully or contact Ortho directly. Instructions do suggest applying a varying number of days before harvest, depending on the type of fruit or vegetable being treated.
Dilution rates vary depending on types of plants being treated but 1 pint makes as much as 64 gals. of spray making this a fairly economical product to use. The instruction book attached to the product is extremely informative and helpful in determining proper dilution and timing of application for specific plantings.
Any simple garden sprayer is sufficient to apply this product making this simple to use and reduces added costs.
Ortho Multi-Purpose Fungicide (Daconil 2787) or Ortho® Garden Disease Control as it is currently being marketed, is available in both pint and quart sized bottles. We purchased the 16 oz.(1 Pt.) size at a cost of $12.99. At suggested dilution rates, I feel this is cheap insurance to keep our large investment in landscape healthy. Therefore I am definitely recommending this product to keep your yard beautiful all season long.
