Ortofon's Gold Has Returned!
by sam-pro | May 20, 2005
Pros: Exceptionally clean wide range record reproduction! Ultra wide stereo separation!
Cons: A bit costly for some audiophiles while most will see it as a bargain!

Sorry for the very late reply. The OM40 stylus is available through Ebay and www.kabusa.com for a decent price. You should replace your stylus annually if you are heavily into vinyl. Other than that...just replace it when you suspect a deterioration in your cartridge's performance. Thanks...Peter

dilemma (Reply to this comment)

I have an OM-40 that T purchased with my AR ES-1 in the 80's. Besides needing a new tonearm cable I probably need a new stylus. My question is A) How do I determine the stylus is in need of replacement? B)Should I go for the OM40 stylus? C)where to buy?

...By the way... that "My Fair Lady" London Stereo cast recording on CBS/Masterworks is truly one of the most pleasurable recordings of all time! You have great taste in vinyl!...Peter

My suggestion would be to start off with the OM5E. This cartridge will perform extremely well in the A-T turntable and can be purchased for under $60 on-line via the link on my homepage. If you indeed find that you like the basic Ortofon OM sound...you can either just stick with the 5E which is great to begin with...or upgrade to the OM40 stylus. The OM40 is NOT available at the moment in complete cartridge form. Any OM series cartridge can be upgraded to the top-of-the-line "40" stylus. Thanks for your comment...Peter

and the kind comments on my posts. You had suggested the Ortofon OM5E? Or should I go whole hog and get the 40? Available from higher end audio shops? Is it worth getting for my AT PL120?

Incidentally, I have that very same London cast recording of My Fair Lady in my small but growing LP collection, and I treasure that album, too!

Thanks, John ...for the nice comment! Yes...CTA was one of those rare albums that I purchased way back in March, 1969 and probably was the only fool at the time to buy the album...at least in my neighborhood as I hadn't heard one song from the album played on the radio at that time...and I dare say no one else had heard of it except for a friend who bought the album off my recommendation one month later ....But wow...what a classic!...Pete 2
