| Suzer's Full Review: Os-Cal Os Cal Chewable Calcium Supplement Tablets ... |
It has been a while since I passed the great young (to me) age of 35 (perhaps generations), and so I have natural concerns about waning calcium in my system. I don't think anyone wants to worry about, much less get Osteoporosis. And I understand that Caucasian and Asian women are most likely to be prone to Osteoporosis, as well as petite, small-boned women, of course those with a family history.
People who are at increased risk of a Vitamin D deficiency are apparently those who have minimal exposure to the sun, African Americans, those with darker skin, those over 50.
While I have tried numerous supplements to try and get some extra calcium, and supplements to increase my Vitamin D. I decided I wanted the supplements and a pleasurable method of getting it! I know, I know, I ask a lot.
Os-Cal has twice the amount of Vitamin D of all the leading calcium products according to the manufacturers. It is additionally free of sugar, though the flavoring is both artificial and natural.
The National Institute of Health (NIH) states that Vitamin D is essential for optimal calcium absorption. Without vitamin D, bones can become thin and brittle. It can be difficult to obtain enough vitamin D from natural food sources and sunlight.
To avoid Osteoporosis in your younger years and particularly as you age, be sure you get regular daily exercise, eat healthy so your bones will be healthy and not thin.

Any problems/warnings you may ask?:
This product contains Phenylalanine.
Yes, curiosity allegedly killed the cat, but for those of you are curious about what this is, here is some information quoted from the Mayo clinic website:
Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid, which means you need it in your diet. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Phenylalanine is especially important to young, growing children. Adults need less phenylalanine in their diet.
Phenylalanine is found in protein-rich foods, such as milk, cheese, nuts, seeds, poultry, fish, as well as some leafy vegetables and whole grains. It's also found in diet foods, such as diet soda, that contain aspartame.
Phenylalanine is safe to eat or drink unless you have phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare birth defect in which an enzyme needed to process phenylalanine is missing. PKU is usually diagnosed in infancy.
For infants and children with this disorder, consuming phenylalanine is dangerous. Adults with this disorder should consult their doctors regarding whether phenylalanine is a concern. If you do not have PKU, phenylalanine in foods is not a concern.
Also, these taste so good (amazingly so in my opinion, please ensure they are away from children or pets.
Where can you find?:
You can find at numerous online stores (drugstore or grocery store), or brick and mortar stores. You will find it at lower costs online so avoid the traffic, parking hassles, long lines.
Packaging:
Os-cal is found in a tamper proof container within a box, and you will find it in various quantities, depending on your preferences. You may wish to start out with a smaller quantity to ensure you enjoy the taste, or do as I do and get a large quantity for a better price.
My experience:
I have to be honest here, I thought these would taste medicinal and chalky, so it was with some real doubt that I chewed my first Os-Cal chewable tablet. I was thrilled when I realized not only is this a great calcium and Vitamin D supplement it has a terrific light lemon taste, is not overly sweet, and I don't find it to be chalky or medicinal tasting at all. Wow!
Any negatives:
Not really, in my opinion. They do have aspartame and sucrose, but in such minute quantities, I don't see it as an issue.
My recommendations:
I recommend this product for any adult who does not have issues with Phenylalanine. Obviously if you have any medical problems that could preclude you from taking this product speak with your physician, but with no sugar, sodium, calories, gluten, it should be great for most people. I am giving it 4 stars. Excellent product!
