Pros: durable, powerful, reasonably priced
Cons: blade loses sharpness over time
My husband brought this Oster Blender with him when we bought this house and moved in together. It collected a whole lot of dust for the first several years here, but it started seeing the light eventually as I got into cooking. These days I use this Osterizer Blender every day and I have grown to love and respect it.
About This Product
This Osterizer Blender consists of a plastic base with several control buttons and a glass jar/lid in which you mix up your concoctions. It has many different speeds that you can use: blend, puree, liquefy, crush, etc. The glass jar and lid are dishwasher-safe, but the base has to be cleaned by simply wiping it down with a damp cloth before stains dry onto it. My husband bought this blender well over 10 years ago when he was living on his own, so I'm not sure how much he paid for it.
I started using this blender gradually as I started getting into cooking and trying different recipes. I started out using it to make homemade cilantro-lime mayonnaise for potato salad and spicy tomatillo sauces for tacos, burritos, etc. I eventually figured out that it was better for making frozen margaritas than my Margaritaville Frozen Concoction Maker so we started using it regularly whenever we entertained. We make our frozen fruit margaritas with tequila, plain mix, and then frozen strawberries, mangoes, pineapple, etc. It is definitely powerful enough to blend up frozen pieces of fruit.
Most recently, I've been using this Oster Blender to make shakes that I've using as my breakfast and lunch. I blend up the morning ones with ice cubes, shake powder, skim milk, and different add-ins (frozen fruit, bananas, peanut butter powder, canned pumpkin, applesauce, etc.). What I've discovered is that this blender isn't quite up to the task of breaking up large whole ice cubes from our freezer. Yes, it does a decent job of blending them but there are always a couple of large chunks of ice at the bottom of the jar because they just weren't totally broken up. This blender is well over 10 years old so I can't get too upset about the pieces of ice that are always left over.
This is a great workhorse blender that has been used by my husband and myself for at least 10 years now. It is great for blending things like crepe batter, mayonnaise, and salsa-type sauces and also for making frozen fruit drinks like margaritas, daquiris, etc. When it comes to making smoothies with ice cubes, the performance falters a bit but I'm sure at this point that part of that is due to the fact that the blender is old. We will probably need to buy a new blender soon and I'll definitely be going for another Osterizer Blender!
