Pros:Compact in size and price but not power; Oster quality, easy cleaning

Cons:Kind of loud when crushing ice; smallish jar

The Bottom Line: It's not family-sized, and it might wake your roommates; but it takes everything you give it and has power to spare.

With a little help from Epinions, I decided to buy, then bought this blender this morning, took it home and went on a smoothie bender! (That's right, a blender bender...)

The little Oster Cube Blender 6642 powered through all the berries, bananas, and yes, even ice cubes, I could throw at it, and it did it in stride. On ice-crush speed (the highest of its 12) the smoothies it cranked out were perfect, with the ice reduced to tiny, crunchy crystals.

Of course, this wasn't without a minimum of noise. The blender itself is a little louder than some, but that might just be a result of its all-metal drive system, in which all the gears, spindles, etc. from the motor to the blade are metal for durability. It's a good thing too, since 450 watts make for some serious blade power. Let's just say that if you make a habit of wearing neckties while you blend, be very careful... But otherwise, power is good, right?

The "Cube" designation refers to the shape of the heavy-duty glass jar, which is just about the most pour-friendly container I've ever used. It holds about 1.5 liters of liquid, which isn't huge, but it's more than adequate for me, living solo. Plus, its small size makes it fit easily into cupboards by itself, and under the cabinet assembled.

The "easy clean" feature of this blender is essentially a super-low speed on which blending warm water and a little dish soap cleans it up in a jif - a very handy feature, especially for smoothies which wind up throwing bits of fruit everywhere. Another nice touch: the rubber lid (which fits satisfyingly tight) has a removable plastic disk in the center which doubles as a small measuring cup.

I haven't done anything else with this blender yet, but even if all it can do is make good fruit smoothies, it's paid for itself already.
