| surferdude7's Full Review: OtterBox BlackBerry 8300 Curve Black Defender Case |
The OtterBox is a great way to protect your expensive Blackberry Curve. It is constructed to be durable and to weather proof the device. It will not waterproof the Curve but it protects the Blackberry pretty good when out in the rain or snow. The OtterBox case is perfect for anyone who works outside, construction or is generally rough on a device like the Curve.
Three Layers of protection: Layer One: is a clear membrane that fits over the top and back of the Curve. The membrane covers the screen and the keys; the membrane is fabricated so it molds over the keys. This leaves only one spot open to moisture and dust, around the trackball. The trackball area is cut open so you can operate the trackball. The membrane on the back of the Curve covers the camera and flash from moisture and dust. On the membrane are two areas that look like cloth that cover the speaker areas so sound flows through clearly.
Layer Two: is a durable hi-impact Polycarbonate shell that comes in two pieces to snap over the Curve to make one piece. The shell helps to moisture proof and dust proof the clear membrane. It also protects the rest of the Curve by placing a hard shell around it.
Layer three: is rubbery feeling silicone skin that fits over the hi-impact Polycarbonate shell. The silicone skin helps to water proof and dust proof the Curve even more. The skin helps if the Curve was to be dropped by absorbing some of the fall. The skin covers all the side keys, but the keys are very easy to use. On the upper left side the skin covers the charging port and headset port, but the skin can be pulled away from this area to use the two ports.
Pros: OtterBox makes one of the best protection cases for the Blackberry Curve. It is very durable if dropped, banged against and if the weather is bad outside and you have to use it.
Cons: What I don’t like is the OtterBox actually makes the Curve bigger and bulkier. The biggest flaw on the OtterBox is the open area around the trackball, but if it was covered with the clear membrane you couldn’t use the trackball very well. My advice is when using it outside in rain or snow, keep your thumb over the trackball area, this should protect the small area fairly well.
My final thoughts: The OtterBox comes with a belt clip that the OtterBox fits in securely. The belt clip is made of the same material as the durable hi-impact Polycarbonate shell. The clip will fit up to about a 1 3/4 inch wide belt.
At first the OtterBox Blackberry Curve Defender Case seemed a little bigger and bulkier, but after using it a couple of days it feels like it should have been there all along. The keys are still raised and easy to use, the side keys are now covered, but they leave an imprint like the OEM keys for easy recognition and the covered keys still work good. There are a few air bubbles in the screen part that I didn’t get out and there are instructions on how to get all the bubbles out. Once the screen is on the air bubbles are hardly noticeable.
Holding the Curve covered by the OtterBox feels good, the silicone skin grips your hand, so it is less likely to slide out of the hand. The OtterBox BlackBerry 8300 Curve Black Defender Case fits my Blackberry Curve 8330.
