Here's what I sent to the President of Outback:
May 13, 2003
Chris T. Sullivan
Outback Steakhouse
2202 N. West Shore Blvd., 5th Floor
Tampa, FL 33607
Dear Mr. Sullivan,
Good day to you, sir! My name is Jimmy Meadowlark, and I wanted to take a moment to let you know about my first (of many to come) outback experience.
On April 30th of this year, I received a refund check from the Internal Revenue Service for overpaid taxes in 2002. I wasnt sure what to do with my money, but I had worked hard all year, and decided I deserved a nice meal. Not to say that Outback Steakhouse was not reasonably priced, I am just a man of slender means.
I had seen a particularly enticing advertisement during the local news, and decided to cash my check at the grocers, and head over to the Outback Steakhouse located on Archer road here in Gainesville. Boy, am I ever glad I did.
I knew it was going to be very busy, so I left straight from the carwash after work. I was a little disappointed when I parked my car (ample parking, kudos!) and saw a line forming at the front door as I walked up. I thought the wait would be a long one, but when I spoke to the hostess, she said that parties of one are usually seated quickly. As you know, the outdoor bar is adjacent to the entrance, and I could see that there were lots of people having a great time, eating steaks and drinking beer just feet from where I stood. Within a couple of moments, the hostess called my name, and took me to a barstool indoors, and handed me a menu.
I must say I was very impressed with the bill of fare. There was something for everyone! It was really hard to decide, but the bartender asked me what kinds of foods I liked to eat, and suggested I try a bloomin onion and a medium rare steak served with potatoes and vegetables. I said ok, and the bartender placed my order right there on the spot! While I waited, the barkeep brought me a glass of the freshest lemonade I ever tasted. Within no time, my food arrived, cooked to perfection. I must say it was one of the most enjoyable meals of my life. I talked to a couple of the guys at the bar next to me, and they also said that they liked to eat at Outback Steakhouse, and have fun watching sports from the bar area.
All in all, I must say that Outback Steakhouse is an incredible place with great food and better people. I do have one question though, it is about your wonderful tv ad. In the ad, when the girl is running on the beach, the announcer says No Rules, Just Right! On my visit, I found this to be mostly true, but when I asked the bartender about it, he said that there were some rules. I found out you have to wear a shirt and shoes to be seated at Outback Steakhouse, and guests are strongly discouraged from bringing non-service animals to dinner with them. Additionally, I encountered a longish line for the men's room, so I helped my self to a very comfortalbe stall in the Ladies room. This was frowned upon by the manager. In spite of these unfortunate experiences, I found that these rules were only slightly inconvenient, so no problems here, but maybe Outback Steakhouse should change their catch phrase to Some Rules, Just Right. But this is only my humble opinion.
Thanks again for creating a super nice place to have dinner, and rest assured I will be back as soon as I can!
Regards,
Jimmy J. Meadowlark
