After stopping for the night in Florence, SC, on our way back to Orlando the kids were hungry and we decided to treat ourselves to a steak meal. Right across from the Courtyard Marriott where we were staying.
I am usually pretty critical when it comes to spending my hard earned money in restaurants. I expect good tasting food and good service. Ive been to Outback Restaurant several times and I have to say that this will probably be the last time. I usually dont give restaurants as many chances as I gave this one, but their slogan (No Rules, Just Right) should be If we had some rules, we could do it right. In case you dont already know this, Outback Steakhouse serves a variety of steaks, prime rib, chicken, seafood, and salads. In looking at some of the top reviews by some of the most respected people on Epinions (popsrocks, Bryan_Carey, etc), my experiences are quite different!!!
We arrived at the restaurant slightly after 8:00 pm on a Tuesday night and it wasnt crowded at all. The blase attitude of the waitress should have been an omen for the rest of the meal.
There are a variety of appetizers which include the Bloomin Onion, Kookaburra Wings, Aussie Cheese Fries, Billabong Ribs (why does this Aussie restaurant serve those with an Asian BBQ sauce?), Crab Cakes (at least they didnt say Fresh Maryland Crab Cakes!), Grilled Shrimp on the Barbie, and Gold Coast Coconut Shrimp.

My wife and decided to cheat on our South Beach diet AGAIN and order the Bloomin Onion for $5.99. I think I remember reading a previous Epinion review months ago by someone who mentioned how greasy it was. I didnt remember their Bloomin Onions being greasy before, but this one was awful. Im not a chef, but I remember reading that if frying oil is either old or not the correct temperature the result will be greasy food. The onion was very large and the batter used was peppery. I liked the peppery taste, but my wife and 11 year son did not. My 8 year old twins tasted it and spit it out.
My wife and I ordered the 12 oz special sirloin for $14.29. It was tough and even with the seasoning it was tasteless. This is in line with my past experiences at Outback in ordering the New York Strip. As side items we both ordered a salad (nothing special: iceberg lettuce, tomato, and red onion slices) and steamed vegetables. It was such a memorable meal that I cant even remember what the veggies were. One of my children ordered the 6 oz sirloin for $4.99. If we thought our steaks were tough, they didnt compare with the lousy steak my child got! OMG it was awful. My older son ordered a plain bowl of pasta with butter which was pretty good. My daughter ordered the chicken fingers and they were only fair. They were done ok, but just didnt taste good. My kids got desserts: A Coke float, ice cream, and an Oreo Sundae. The total of the bill before tip was $65.67
In previous experiences at Outback we were at least happy with the service. Not at this restaurant. The greeting hostess barely smiled, and the waitress acted like she was doing us a favor by waiting on us. I thought I was very generous in giving her a 15% tip.
This was probably our last stop at an Outback. Next time we want it done right, well go to a different restaurant.
