| Adanna's Full Review: Outer Banks, NC |
My husband and I vacationed in the Outer Banks in September 2004 and again in September 2005. Going in the off season was a bonus because we practically had the beach to ourselves for miles and miles - kind of like having our own private beach. Every now and then we saw people, but other than that there was no one. That made it perfect to be able to sit there on the beach and just listen to the sounds of the ocean. Also, the weather was nice and not too hot - it was just right!
There are a lot of hotels/motels along the beach. Sometimes you can book them rather cheap if you manage to catch a good deal. I booked on through Travelodge called "Honey of a Deal" - and that it was! We paid $39.00 a night for seven nights. Some of the other lodging places I looked at were $80-$200 a night.
The beaches were really clean, other than some stuff that the ocean brings in, like seaweed. But there wasn't any trash. I was impressed with the fact it was so well kept, by both residents and visitors. At most of the public access areas to the beach, there are little "doggie bags" so if you are taking your dog on the beach, you have a bag to put their dropping in.
There is a beach across from where Bodie Island Lighthouse is called Coquina Beach. There is an old ship wreck on the beach which you can see depending on how much sand has blown over it. Sometimes you can see it really well and other times you can walk right past it and not notice it is even there. The most impressive part of the beach is the sea shells called coquinas. They are pure white and beautiful! I didn't see these kinds of shells on any other beach while in the Outer Banks, yet on Coquina Beach, they are ALL OVER!
We went to see the lighthouses - Currituck, Cape Hatteras, Bodie, and Ocracoke. We climbed both the Currituck and Hatteras lighthouses. It was really hot and humid the day we climbed Cape Hatteras, but there are little places to rest about every three flights. It's a long way to the top, but the view is spectacular!
I found the people to be friendly where ever we went. There are a lot of shops all over, so if you're an avid shopper, you'll be in paradise! There are so many souvenir shops, bookstores with DVD and books about the Outer Banks and all the lighthouses, and some shops that have hand made items. There are also some great restaurants, such as the Black Pelican, Hurricane Mo's, Coastal Cactus just to name a few.
Overall. the Outer Banks is a very peaceful place to spend vacation! I hope to go back again and again!
