Hubby and I needed a place to stay on our way down the coast. We called and asked if they had room for the night, and they did. Nancy is the resident innkeeper, while Nicole and Melissa live off the premises.
We arrived a bit before the scheduled time, due to the lack of traffic jams, about when we thought we would. Free parking was available to the right side of the house, in a small lot. We knocked on the door, but there was no answer. We called one of the numbers written on a note at the front door and were soon greeted by the resident innkeeper who had stepped next door.
Nancy was pleasant and apologized for not being there when we arrived, but stepped next door to have tea with a neighbor. She mentioned that all the bedrooms had their own bathroom, that this house was built to be a bed and breakfast. Yeah, OK… (We didn’t realize until we read the room book that this house was a reproduction of an older house with the conveniences, wiring and heating of a house built in the 1990s!)
She oriented us to the house, showing us the library which was near the front door. Various diplomas graced the wall, including a degree in psychology and another in culinary arts. She walked us up the wide steps and up to the third level, where our room was. Along the way were a chalkboard and a couple refrigerators. Included in the offerings were a water decanter, chilled soda pop and adult beverages. Hubby grabbed a beer and a small glass of wine. I helped him drink those and had a diet soda for myself. Also toward the top was a plate of freshly made fruit cookies!
Our room was large and included a king bed with 6 pillows, including 2 decorator pillows. There were 2 end tables and a color TV tucked away in an armoire. A semi open beam ceiling was above us, with part of the beams exposed and part hidden. An individual heater/air conditioner was positioned above the television at ceiling height. It didn’t make too much noise providing our heat. The bed was comfortable and we slept well. We stayed in the Bamboo Room. A total of six guest rooms are available, some with twin beds and others that accommodate three people.
The next morning at 7:30, as prearranged the night before, Nicole brought our coffee to our door. (We learned as well as a service, this is to make sure guests are awake and on time for breakfast!) We enjoyed our coffee and went downstairs.
One guest joined us for breakfast, followed by two additional guests as we were finishing. Breakfast consisted of homemade granola, blueberry pancake with smoked chicken sausage and sweet bread. There could have been a couple other items, but they don’t come to mind.
We noticed a cellophane bag of their granola for sale, $3.95 a pound. We asked them about it, and they were kind enough to show us how it was done. Their granola had been in stores, but they were at the place they either had to do the granola big time, or limit it to their bed and breakfast, which they did.
Upon returning to our room, I noticed there was a wrought iron ire escape staircase just outside, in case we had to exit from our third floor room. As well, this was a respectable neighborhood.
We were pleased at the graciousness of our hosts, their good food, and would not hesitate going back there again.
