Freak369's Full Review: Oxford 3 x 5 Spiral Bound Ruled Index Cards White ...
If I said it once, I'll say it a thousand times. My kids are geeks. That doesn't mean that I don't love them, protect them and nurture them but when they would rather stay in the basement and do experiments than play on the beach I have to wonder if I wasnt part of some bizarre in-vitro experiment when I was pregnant with them. Sure, they look like me, have slight freak-like tendencies [a deep love of Legos being one of them] and have the same strange quirks that I have but outside of that they are complete opposites of me. For some reason they love index cards of all shapes and sizes. For them this is the easiest way to keep their projects organized so it was just a matter of time before they saw the Oxford Ruled Index Cards and freaked over them. You might think that a review of a basic office supply might be boring well chances are you will fall asleep before it is done but there is only so much you can do with something like index cards or is there
Oxford Spiral Bound Index Cards
I think everyone has seen an index card at some point in his or her lives so I dont think I need to go into detail about what they look like. What makes this such a great product is that the cards are attached to a metal spiral at the top. The edges of the metal spiral are neatly tucked inside the ends so you wont have to worry about it catching on clothing or ripping into skin. The metal spine allows you to keep your note cards organized as well as keeping them from getting bent, lost, banged up or otherwise destroyed. Of course, the downside is that you cant rearrange them if you need to change the order of the cards. This is when its helpful to have a file case handy to store the cards that have been ripped out.
These are 3 x 5 inch cards with a red header and blue lines. This product was available unlined with no header a few years ago but I havent seen them lately so I have no idea if they are still on the market. If plain boring white cards dont do it for you, you can pick these up in a very cool neon assortment as well. The tops of the cards are perforated and are pretty easy to remove but I suggest bending them back and forth a few times so you get a clean break. The remaining piece stays neatly tucked inside the spiral but I prefer to remove them so I dont end up with paper shards everywhere. There is about a 1/8th inch portion of the top of the card that remains inside the metal spiral once the card is removed but you can still expect to get some bit of the top of the cards when you flip through them. The cards are bound to the spiral with a nice thick cardboard backing. This is great if you are taking notes and dont have a table or writing area in front of you.
The cards are the standard thickness for index cards so you can use pens, pencils or certain markers on these without having to worry about the ink running through to other pages. If you use Sharpies [permanent markers] you might notice that the ink will travel through to the backside of the page but unless you are writing super slow or drawing graphs or designs on them, generally the ink wont seep on to other pages. Save the paints and other mediums for thicker, sturdier types of paper because if you try to use them on these youll end up with warped pages. The cards are pretty strong so if you need a makeshift ruler or need to draw some small lines, the edges of these cards will do in a pinch. If you are worried about the metal spine getting caught on clothing or skin dont. I cant stress this enough the edges are crimped inward so they wrap around the metal spiral. Unless you sit there and play with it and start pulling at it, it will stay locked in place and completely safe.
The boys use these all the time for schoolwork, projects, tracking their homework pages and when they are on field trips for taking notes. Having the cards in a notebook style with the metal spiral keeps them from getting lost or bent and if they make a mistake all they have to do is rip the page out and start over. My oldest son uses several of these when he is doing interactive activity pages on the internet so he knows what he has complete, his scores and what areas he needs to return to in case the module isnt saved properly. If you are a homeschooler, these are a great investment for kids so they can take notes, chart their progress, organize their subjects and for keeping track of supplies for projects. This also makes it easier for me when I have to make a trip to the office supply or art store, all I have to do is take the index card booklet with me and use it as a shopping list.
The Bottom Line
I keep one of these in my backpack all the time for notes, to keep track of purchases and general odds and ends. Its a lot easier than having to rummage through the Day Planner for a scrap of paper and makes it easier to find things Ive jotted down. The uses for this handy index card / notebook combination are endless and for the suggested retail price of about $1.00 - $1.25 its a cheap way to get organized and stay organized! Great for kids, teens and adults, this gets two thumbs up from me!
