I started using these when the boys were sick of having to dig through a huge plastic box to look for the instruction sheets and booklets for their Lego sets. Until then I stuck with the heavy paper and cardboard ones but now that Ive used these for a few years, theres no way Ill go back to the paper ones. The beauty of these is that you can store almost anything in them, in fact, its one of the ways that I keep everything handy when writing reviews for Epinions. The twelve pockets lets me have separate sections for toys, electronics, office supplies, home and garden, sport stuff, clothing and all the other cool areas of the site. I dont have to worry about losing index cards that Ive pasted labels to or instruction booklets for electronic items. But thats just the start of what you can use this for; if you do scrapbooking you can keep your papers in it, for kids its a great way to keep papers arranged according to subject or when assignments are due and for the busy soccer mom, its the easiest way to keep registration forms, emergency numbers, schedules and papers in one place and organized.
Oxford Desktop Expanding File 15 x 10 Silver
If you have more than a few things that you want to keep organized and in one central place, then Oxfords Expanding File is something that you are definitely going to want to check out. You can stuff it with all kinds of things from papers and notes to projects, crafting supplies [felt, material, cut outs], warranty and instruction booklets, forms, greeting cards, photographs and more. These are a must for anyone that travels for business or needs to keep a ton of receipts to turn in for expense reports. You can have them stored according to month, city, project or department and since there are twelve pockets you will have enough sections to keep things organized. This comes with small tabs that you can write on and slide into the index slots; these are the same size as the ones that you use for binder pages so if you need more of them, you can purchase those refill packs. There are inserts for the alphabet, months and a strip of blank ones to get you started; you dont have to use these tabs but they do make things a lot easier to find if you do have the pockets labeled.
As far as this being expandable; they arent lying or exaggerating. The bottom of it does expand when the pockets become full; if you are going to store small things in it you might run into a little bit of a problem. The pockets arent completely closed on the bottom of the folder pockets so small things may find their way out of one section and into another but the outer section of it is completely closed so there is no risk of losing anything. This can be kept on a desk or popped into a drawer; the one that I use for Epinions stuff sits on the floor next to my desk and since its full, it never tips over. The elastic cord on the front of it loops around a large button so once you close it up, everything is safe. Since it is elastic instead of string it has a lot of stretch to it so if you really stuff this thing to capacity, you wont have any trouble closing it. Another nice feature to this is the front of it; its clear so you can have a list of things that are in it or items that you are going to need to have close at hand. This is not waterproof; if you are out and it starts to drizzle it will protect the contents but its not something that is made to be waterproof.
The size may be a little too large for some people, it measures fifteen inches long by ten inches high. Oxford makes these in different sizes so if you think that this is going to be too large, be sure to check their website to see the others that they make. I like the silver color, it is neutral without being boring. The Lego catalogs from previous years get stored in blue ones, the instruction booklets and sheets go in the red ones and the white ones are for Neopets stuff. Outside of that we also use these for the homeschooling stuff; since there are twelve pockets we can divide up worksheets and projects over the months as well as monthly reviews and quarterly exams. This is one of the few plastic twelve pocket expandable file folders that Ive come across, especially in the 10 x 15 size. I would rather have these be too big than to be too small and have to fold things.
You can find these at most of the larger office supply stores like Staples, Office Depot and Shoplet but if you are going to buy them online make sure that you read the description of the item. Photo images are not exactly 100% accurate so you cant go by those when you are ordering. I bought a bunch of these when they were on sale for $3.00 each; the normal selling price is anywhere from $4.00 to $5.00 which might sound like a lot to pay for one of these but trust me, they are almost indestructible. Even if you are someone that opens and closes it a hundred times a day, you will have a hard time wearing it out or having any of the pockets show signs of wear. If the silver color isnt to your liking, check their website to see all the colors that this comes in.
The Bottom Line
The only possible downside to this is the size; unless you have a need to store oversized papers or legal documents chances are you will be able to get away with one of the smaller versions. But hey, I would rather have something that is larger so that if I do need to store something that is longer than usual I can do so without bending it or having it get wrinkled. You can store about a half inch of paper in each of the pockets so this thing is capable of handling a lot at one time without the possibility of the edges ripping or tearing. It protects items inside from dust and dirt and if you add some cardboard pieces to a few of the sections this is great to store copy paper or cover stock in. As I mentioned, this is also great for people who do crafts; you can store project sheets, felt, scrapbooking items, balsa sheets, templates and more in them. It helps keep things organized, lets you find stuff quickly and keeps them from getting damaged. To top it all off, you can customize them with any type of permanent marker. Annabelle is still waiting for them to make these in pink or purple, she swears she saw one at Office Depot in purple ... now when we drive by one she has to stop and look to see if there are any in her colors.
As always, thanks for the read!
