| Javelina's Full Review: Oxo 14" Nylon Spoon (black) |
Now that I have bought some good frying pans and non-stick cookware, I need the appropriate cooking utensils to go with them. I take care of my kitchen supplies, so I wanted to pick out some plastic utensils, with one of them being the Oxo 14 Nylon Spoon. They do offer a spoon of this size in metal, but I specifically wanted plastic so that it wouldnt scratch my cookware.
Packaging & Appearance
The Oxo Nylon Spoon came by itself, with a plastic sticker wrapped around the handle. I was looking in the store to see if they had any sets of plastic cooking tools, but they only had a set of kitchen essentials (which had a peeler and so on). If I remember correctly, at Target you can buy a set of 6 plastic kitchen utensils for around $20, which will save you some money. I also saw the set at BJs for $14.99! I think they are slightly different, but are basically the same idea- plastic utensils with rubber grips.
The spoon has a hole in the top of the handle for storage. The handle is black rubber, otherwise known as Santoprene. And the rest of the spoon is made from a nylon material.
Performance
Scratch Free Non-stick Cookware!
My pots and pans were in no danger using the Oxo Nylon Spoon. I have used this spoon for cooking and serving foods like rice, cous cous, and more. The spoon part isnt too round- more oval- so the shape is nice for getting in the corners of cookware. Keep in mind it isnt very deep, so it wont work well as a ladle- rather, more of a stirrer or serving spoon for non-soup food items.
The handle is not just comfortable, but it also offers a good grip (hence the name Oxo Good Grips. And, the handle doesnt get very hot because its not a good conductor of heat. The spoon is heat resistant up to 250 degrees F. I have left this spoon in a pot of soup that was cooking, with no problems. I have also used it to stir soup, and in making sure the soup wasnt sticking to the pot, I would press the spoon against the bottom of a pot- again, with no damage. I havent noticed any warping or changes in shape even by pressing the spoon against the bottom of a hot pot/pan.
The Oxo spoon has a little bit of give to it. It isnt completely stiff or brittle. I wouldnt say this spoon bends, but if you apply pressure, it will bend just a little. Im glad its neither extreme; instead its just right.
The black rubber handle is textured on the sides, and is comfortable. It provides a nice grip, even if your hands are wet.
Dishwasher Safe?
When I look at Oxos products that have rubber on them, I always think they arent dishwasher safe. But they are indeed dishwasher safe. However, even though they are, I usually just rinse or wash these types of cooking tools right after Ive used them so that they are not only ready to be used again, but that I dont have to worry about food drying to them.
Satisfaction Guarantee
I never worry when I buy Oxo products, because they are backed by a guarantee. I feel like I dont have to worry about wasting any of my money. But Im also confident enough in Oxo that I figure it will be less likely that I will need to use that guarantee.
Price & Where to Find
I bought the Oxo Nylon Spoon at Linens N Things, where I can find a good selection of Oxo products. Bed Bath & Beyond has a lot of kitchen tools as well. The spoon cost me $5.99. What I do when Im ready to buy something from either of these stores, I wait for a coupon to come in the mail. I use a $5 of $15 coupon, which can save you a lot. Keep in mind that the stores will accept competitors coupons (a.k.a. each others!). This is a good opportunity to get a free $5, or free kitchen gadget, depending on how you look at it.
As I mentioned earlier, you can get the whole set for cheaper at some stores. The cooking utensils wont be exactly identical to this (I think the handles are fatter and have a red Oxo logo on them), but are essentially the same.
Overall
Each time I add an Oxo product to my collection, my positive thoughts on this brand are reinforced. I wouldnt hesitate to keep adding more Oxo items to my kitchen, and this is one Im glad I have. This isnt meant to be a soup ladle, but does a wonderful job with stirring and serving.
