I don’t do a lot of “zesting”, which is probably why I bought the Oxo 5.5” Citrus Zester. I wanted to try my hand at doing some new kinds of cooking, and thought this would be an interesting addition to the kitchen. I am a vegetarian, so there are plenty of times that I prepare fruits and vegetables.
Packaging & Appearance
I think the Oxo Zester came attached to a little piece of cardboard. I bought it at Linen’s N Things for $5.99. Both Linens N Things and Bed Bath & Beyond offer regular coupons, such as $5 off $15 for 20% off (and accept each other’s coupons), so it is an incentive for a purchase like this.
This zester is easily recognized as an Oxo product, with a trademark black rubber handle. The handle has a hole in the top for convenient storage.
Performance
I don’t think I had ever “zested” anything before using the Oxo Citrus Zester. Since buying this product, I have tried it on a variety of fruits and veggies. I have used it on citrus fruits, like a lemon. But I have also used it for other things like garnishing a salad with string-like bits of carrots.
This is a tough little tool. When I put my strength into pushing the Oxo Zester into something like a carrot, I don’t have any problems. The metal doesn’t bend back when I’m pushing against something. The metal is also stainless steel, so it is reliable and durable.
The handle, which is Oxo’s Santoprene rubber, is shaped nicely to fit into the palm of your hand. The rubber is of course, non-slip, so even if your hand is wet, you won’t have to worry about zesting some fingers into your food.
The end of the zester has five little knife-like holes that grate things like lemon rinds. The edges are pretty sharp, and dig nicely into the fruit. At the same time, it doesn’t dig too deep, and doesn’t yield pieces of zest that are too big.
Then there is a larger channel knife that you can use to make things like garnishes. I’ve used this for things like creating little curved strands of carrots to sprinkle on top of a salad. Or instead of using this to make garnishes, you can cut decorative lines or so on into a fruit or vegetable.
Although I don’t need to use the Oxo Zester as often as more common kitchen tools, it comes in handy when I need it. I can rely on this product for when I need something zested in a recipe, or for garnishes.
Dishwasher Safe?
This is a dishwasher safe product, although I can never remember that the black handle will be alright. Usually I just rinse or wash the zester right away, since it wouldn’t fit well into the utensil tray of the dishwasher very well anyway.

Oxo products they are backed by a guarantee. You can’t be reimbursed for damages you cause on your own, but if there is something wrong with the product, you can get a refund or replacement. Out of all the Oxo products I own, I’ve never had a problem with any of them. This is just another testament to the high quality that I have come to expect when I purchase an Oxo product.
Overall
The Oxo Zester is a fun little gadget to have around the kitchen. I have enjoyed experimenting with it for zests, garnishes, and decorative food preparation. This is the first zester that I have owned, and it has been a cinch to use. It’s a fun little tool to have in the kitchen, and leaves plenty of room for experimentation! Oxo makes cooking a pleasure, and their products are wonderful investments.
