Recently, I realized I needed a cheese slicer. I couldn’t believe we hadn’t thought of it earlier, but since we were planning on entertaining, we decided to get one. I absolutely love Oxo products, so checked their website, and sure enough, they have a Wire Cheese Slicer.
Design & Functionality
Oxo products are easily recognized by their trademark rubber handles. The black Santoprene coats the handle, and the rest of the slicer is made of zinc. The wire itself is stainless steel. The handle has a hole in it for easy storage or handling. Oxo makes a rack that has hooks on it that you can buy for your kitchen, to hang your tools. (Very tempting!)
My Thoughts
The only thing that could be better about the Oxo Wire Cheese Slicer is that the wire is not adjustable. The website says, “ Ideal for thin slices of cheese”. I can’t say that it is crucial that I have variable widths of my slices of cheese, but it would be nice to have the option. I’m not overly displeased that I’m “stuck” with one slice width – it’s a nice width. But there may come a time that I want some really thin or thick slices of cheese, and I’ll have to either abandon the thought, or find some other method of cutting the cheese. However, when I think back to the clunky, plain metallic cheese slicer for $18 at Williams & Sonoma, I would choose the Oxo anyday.
This wire cheese slicer works great. The wire is strong and smooth, and glides nicely through the cheese. It is sufficiently wide enough to be compatible with various blocks/sizes of cheese.
The handle is comfortable and non-stick. I don’t have to worry about my hand slipping, and it allows me to get some nice leverage while cutting. The sides of the rubber handle have little “fins”, which allows for even better grip. The handle is sort of on the short side, but this works perfectly well, since you hold the handle up close to the slicer.
The Oxo Wire Cheese Slicer is durable and very useful. I find that it is actually motivating me to buy and use cheese. It’s a pain to have to cut cheese up with a cheese knife, in comparison to the wire slicer, which makes it so much simpler. It will make entertaining with a cheese platter so much more of a feasible option – and a lot less time consuming.
Dishwasher Safe?
Oxo products are dishwasher safe. Looking at them and the black rubber, I never think that they are, but sure enough, they are. With this wire cheese slicer, I wash it right away, so as not to let the cheese dry on. Also, then I have it on hand.
Price, Purchasing Tips, Guarantee
After checking the Oxo website, I wasn’t sure if the store would carry it, but there it was at Bed Bath & Beyond for $8.99. (I never remembered seeing these there before!).
Keep in mind that both Linen’s N Things and Bed Bath & Beyond put out two coupons: $5 off $15 or 20% off one item. The coupons can be used at either store, and really come in handy. I have also been told by the employees to keep coupons that have expired, because they still honor them. Indeed, I used an expired 20% off coupon for this purchase!
You can use these coupons strategically for a really good deal, and it makes a great incentive for purchasing items. Oxo items can be a little pricey, but if you make sure you’re on the mailing list for the coupons, you can save on your purchases.
All Oxo products are backed by a satisfaction guarantee. I have quite a few of their kitchen items, and have never had to use the guarantee. I’m just happy that the Oxo company feels confident enough in their products to back them in this way.
Overall
This is a perfect tool for cheese. Whether you’re a cheese connoisseur or you just want something on hand, this is a great item for the kitchen. I’m thrilled to have this on hand for entertaining, as well as various cooking projects that involve cheese.
This would be 5 stars, but I have to take off a star for it’s not being adjustable. 4 stars.
