Eat an Apple a Day, the Easy Way, with An Oxo Apple Wedger!

When I was a kid, I remember my mom using an apple divider. It was just plain metal, but it got the job done. In browsing through Oxo products, I ended up buying a “more modern” Oxo apple divider for my own kitchen, which cost $6.99.
As always, I purchase most of my kitchen items at Linen’s N Things or Bed Bath & Beyond. They accept each other’s coupons (as competitors), and if you use your coupons strategically, it can be a really great incentive! I also hear that BB&B takes expired coupons, at least the one near me takes them.
The Oxo Apple Divider
This divider is 7" x 4" x 2", and weighs in at 3 oz. Mine is white, like in the product picture above, but I have seen it in a charcoal black color as well.
This divider has sharp steel blades, which easily cut through apples. (They aren’t razor sharp, which I don’t feel present a major danger in terms of lightly touching them with your fingers. They are sharp, but won’t slice off a finger if you leave it in a kitchen drawer.). The blades are arranged like slices of pie, with a circle in the middle to cut out the core.
The handles are well-designed in several respects. They are soft, with a layer of rubber that is associated with most Oxo products. The handles are also raised up enough so that you don’t slam your fingers or knuckles down on the counter.
This product is dishwasher safe, although I find that a quick rinse or scrub suffices, so that it is ready and on hand.

I love that Oxo products are backed by a guarantee; however, I have never had to utilize it, nor to I expect to have to. It is always great to find companies that stand behind their products!
My Thoughts
This is a very useful tool, and is simple to use. You simply center the divider over the top of an apple, and push. It doesn’t take a tremendous amount of effort, and it saves a ton of time. You end up with neatly sliced sections of apple, minus the core. Highly efficient!
I obviously use this for when I eat an apple. It saves me the trouble of having to cut up apples, and honestly makes eating an apple that much more enticing. I would so much rather have an apple that is all cut up, rather than biting into one whole, especially if it’s cold. This way, boom, the apple is cut up and ready to go.
Recently, we have bought and kept on hand these little, individual cups of caramel that is designed for dipping apples in. We’ll sometimes grab the caramel, divide the apple, and voila! A tasty treat!
The Oxo apple divider makes life so much easier when you consider using apples in bulk. I just got a Breville Juicer for Christmas this year, and although it is designed to fit most apples whole, some juicers don’t – and this is where the divider would come in handy. I would be much more inclined to use my juicer if I didn’t have to stand there chopping up my apples (which is why I love my Breville!), so for those who can’t fit in whole fruits, this would be perfect. You can even throw in the core!
Another good situation would be if you were making apple pies, where you needed to cut up a ton of apples. Even if you need the pieces smaller than the wedges that the Oxo makes, you can just halve or quarter the slices after dividing up the apple.
The Oxo apple divider really takes the work out of preparing fruit, which I would say is the #1 reason I (and lots of other people) don’t eat enough fruit! When I have kids, I would imagine that preparing a fresh snack of apples for my kids or a bunch of kids would be a breeze. (And in my experience, most people will snatch up fruits and veggies when they are pre-cut/prepared, but would hesitate to prepare it themselves).
This doesn’t have to just be used for apples, either. I use this for pears as well. I can’t think of any other fruits that are compatible with this, but I’m fine with the apples alone.
Lastly, there is definite aesthetic value in dividing apples with this tool. There’s nothing like making a plate or platter of fruit that has perfect, flawless slices of apples on it!
I can’t really say that I can find anything negative about this product. It is durable, dishwasher safe, backed by a guarantee, easy to use, and makes eating apples a breeze!
