I am reviewing the Oxo* Good Grips Swivel Peeler. Mine has the black handle. A bit of a history. I am not much of a cook. I have 2 peelers – one works somewhat and one doesn’t at all. (I will throw it away.) My husband said he would do Weight Watchers with me if I always had veggies cut up for him to munch on rather than the bag a day of pretzels. So I have been doing a lot of difficult peeling. I saw a Tupperware stand while shopping. The peeler was $8.00. I saw the Oxo in a store for $5.99 and having read many reviews on this brand, I bought it.
What is this peeler like:
Let’s start with some of the features of it.
We know it is 7 inches long.
The handle itself is almost 4 inches long and 1-½ inches wide. These dimensions don’t matter all that much except that it is very, very different than any peeler I have used.
The handle has a hole in it so you can hang it up.
We are told that it is non-slip and it is. The handle is made of rubber and even when it is wet, it doesn’t slip. I love it.
The handle is soft and feels nice to hold. I don’t mind peeling carrots and cucumbers any more. I used to really dread this chore because it was so difficult.
Although you can hold the handle wherever it is comfortable for you, at the top closest to the blades are ridges making that area even softer and more comfortable.
When I first got it, there was a blue see-through cover over the peeler so no one would cut themselves. The peeler is sharp. It isn’t as sharp, perhaps as a knife, but close to it. Unlike many of your pots and pans your children may play with, this is not a toy! Keep it away from children.
The blade of the peeler is made of stainless steel.
It swivels which makes peeling even easier because the blade turns as is needed for the job you are doing.
It has a built in potato eyer. What that means is at the top there is a small spoon type scoop that you can scoop the eye of the potato out with. It has made my life easier since I used to use my nails.
Oxo information:
“Oxo is dedicated to providing innovative consumer products that make everyday living easier.” The peeler has won the Tylenol/Arthritis Foundation Design Award and the International Design Excellence Award. To see more awards go to http://www.oxo.com/eyeonoxo/index.html
It is a division of General Housewares Corporation and the product design if by Smart Design.
On the back of the package we are given a culinary clue: “Remove a strip of peel from around the center of an apple to prevent the skin from cracking during baking.”
Other information:
It is dishwasher safe. I usually just wash it with detergent and water or even more likely just rinse it with water and it comes nice and clean.
Your satisfaction is guaranteed.
The website is great: www.oxo.com. You can find out about the history and philosophy of the company, how the products are developed and recipes from fans.
You will also notice on the site or in a store a Y shaped peeler. The Tupperware seller had this shape also. She explained that the Y shaped peeler was better for someone who peels toward themselves and the more traditional one is better if you peel away. I peel away but I find that my Oxo swivel peeler is as effective and works just as well in either direction.
Customer Service:
The package says that the product is guaranteed which I mentioned above but it doesn't say what that means so I e-mailed the company and promptly got this reply:
Dear Jo,
Thank you for contacting OXO International, a subdivision of World Kitchen, Inc. We normally handle any warranty situations. Please reply with your shipping address, the name and brief description of the product that you are experiencing difficulty with, and we will be glad to send you a replacement through the mail.
Sincerely,
World Kitchen
*The company spells their product with capital letters and on the package it appears like OXO, but in keeping with epinions name of the peeler I spelled it with lower letters.
Also this is the full name of the product. Notice the Good Grips in the name.
My final thoughts:
This was my first Oxo product and if I buy another houseware type product I would definitely go with Oxo. It is so comfortable. As I said I am doing a lot of peeling and my fingers don’t hurt, I don’t have any blisters and it is just a pleasure to use. 5 stars.
