| Javelina's Full Review: Oxo 7" Swivel Peeler (black) |
The Oxo Good Grips Swivel Peeler was the first Oxo product that I owned. After having this product, I soon added many other in the Oxo line.
Functionality
Im a vegetarian, so I use peelers all the time. I peel lots of veggies, especially because Im very aware of pesticides and other coatings (like wax). So although veggie skins are nutritional, unless they are organic, they have to go, whether its potatoes or carrots.
The handle is a black, processed rubber material, SantopreneŽ. This seems to be the trademark of Oxo products, and a feature that I absolutely love. It also tends to be a deciding factor when comparing this product to other ones like Zyliss or whatnot.
The blade is stainless steel, and is very sharp. I really wouldnt want anything other than stainless steel, because its a good investment. The blades cut through things very smoothly.
The tip has a built in potato eyer, which is great, because peeling and eying potatoes goes hand in hand! The eyer is made out of the same plastic that the back of the blade is made from.
The swivel part of the peeler works nicely to peel over contours and various shapes. It truly makes peeling a breeze, adjusting to different surfaces, without being unwieldy.
Comfort
This Oxo Good Grips Swivel Peeler is very comfortable and easy to use. There are times that I make large quantities of soups or salads, and this peeler would be my first choice. The handle is large enough to fit in your grasp, and since its made with rubber, it wont slip out of your hands. When youre peeling things, you often go back and forth between peeling and rinsing, so I often find my hands wet.
The handle has a section near the top (where you would rest your thumb), on both sides, where the rubber is sliced. (This means it can be used by righties and lefties!) This part of the handle provides an additional soft, textured grip, and I find that its the perfect spot for my thumb to rest.
Storage
The handle has a hole in it. This provides you with the option of hanging the Oxo Good Grips Swivel Peeler, but I just store it in a drawer.
Durability
I can never seem to remember if Oxo products are dishwasher safe. However, even with that black, rubber handle, the Oxo Good Grips Swivel Peeler is indeed dishwasher safe. I usually just rinse off the blade when Im done peeling, and Im set to go.
So Many Awards!
I checked out the Oxo website, and stumbled upon these rewards, which are for the peeler alone!
Tylenol/Arthritis Foundation Design Award
Museum of Modern Art, permanent collection
Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, permanent collection
Industrial Design Excellence Awards, Gold Medal
Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design, permanent collection
Price & Where to Find
I believe I got this peeler for around $7.00 at Linens N Things, but I see Oxo products gaining popularity in many stores. There are other nice peelers out there, and I like other brands, such as Zyliss, but find myself sticking to the rubbery Oxo Good Grips(forgive the pun!).
You can buy this peeler by itself, or in a set with a knife, as well as larger sets. It also comes in a stainless steel version, where the majority of the product is metal, except for rubberized sides on the handle.
I think the price is very reasonable, and even though it may be a few dollars more than some other peelers, its a great investment.

Overall
I just really enjoy using Oxo products. They are well-designed and a joy to use. I look forward to adding to my collection of Oxo gadgets, and this is one of those items that I would look forward to putting on a wedding registry. This product saves you the hassle of peeling frustrations and makes food preparation a breeze. It couldnt be better, with the large, rubberized handle, grips, sharp blade, swiveling head, and potato eyer.
