| Javelina's Full Review: Oxo 8.5" Stainless Steel Spreader |
For our wedding, we created a registry at Linens N Things. I have most of the kitchen items that I need, with the exception of a few. Our favorite kitchen brand is Oxo, so we added some Oxo items to our registry to compliment our collection.
This spreader is listed as only $4.99 on Oxo.com. We buy our Oxo items at either Linens N Things or Bed Bath & Beyond. Keep in mind that if you are on their mailing list, you will get $5 off $15 or 20% off coupons in the mail, and that these stores accept competitors coupons. I have also had my Bed Bath & Beyond accept their own stores expired coupons.
Oxo Spreader
This spreader measures 9" x 1" x 1" and weighs in at 2 oz.. The handle is black rubber. The handle has a hole in it for hanging/storage. I have been wanting an Oxo Tool Rack for some time now, hopefully I will get one in the near future!
The blade is of course, stainless steel. This looks like a larger version of small cocktail spreaders (at least to me).
This is dishwasher safe and has a satisfaction guarantee. Also, if you are not satisfied with any Oxo product or it breaks, you can get a refund or replacement (within reasonable limits as in, if broke in half while you were spreading butter, yes, not if dropped down the disposal!).
My Thoughts & Experiences
I love butter and cheese, so of course a spreader gets much use in our house. I love toast, bagels, waffles, and so on. We also eat things like goat cheese. The spreader has that rounded edge but is also strong and sharp. There is also a little bit of serration for biting through things like cheese. The blade is strong enough that you get sufficient leverage for cutting through harder items like a block of cheddar. Of course, I do have my Oxo Wire Cheese Slicer for things like cutting cheese!
We have a tub of vegan butter in the fridge (let me tell you, its better than real butter and my carnivorous friends agree). Generally, my bad habit over the years is gouging the butter with a butter knife, which used to drive my mom crazy. She would have really appreciated it if we had an Oxo spreader. With it, you get nice curls of butter rather than little chunks. You not only get spreadable butter, but it leaves a nice, clean surface area compared to using a regular butter knife, which, despite my almost intentional gouging, tends to jab into the butter because you cant get the flat edge to it.
Although I dont normally eat things like jelly, I do have the occasional peanut butter and jelly. The Oxo spreader is perfect for PB&J because of its wide tip and large size. Normally I get pretty frustrated trying to get clumps of jelly out of the jar with a butter knife, whereas the spreader has more surface area and can pick it up better and of course spread it better. A lot of times, a butter knife goes right through the bread, but with the Oxo spreader, theres less of a chance that I will mangle my sandwich.
I always second-guess myself, but Oxo products are dishwasher safe - even with that rubber handle. And even though this brand item is dishwasher safe, they usually just get washed by hand right after using because we use them so often. I hate needing my favorite Oxo spoon and its sitting there in the dishwasher with spaghetti sauce stuck all over it! In this case, I am not a big fan of going to make breakfast, only to find that my Oxo spreader is covered with 3-day-old cream cheese that has to be scraped and washed off.
Lastly, I love that rubber handle that is the trademark of Oxo products. It is comfortable and makes for a great grip, even if your hands are wet or have food on them.
Overall
Obviously, I wanted this item since we had added it to our registry. I had totally forgotten we had put it on our registry, and was psyched when we got it! I am thrilled to have this item and it gets quite a bit of use. We actually use this often enough that we keep it in our utensil drawer, rather than the Oxo drawer!
