| Javelina's Full Review: Oxo 9" Ice Cream Spade (black) |
I have a variety of Oxo kitchen tools, including their regular ice cream scoop. When I go to visit my parents, however, I use my moms 9 Ice Cream Spade. We bought the spade years ago, and since then, Oxo has come out with a Non-stick and steel version of the same scoop as well.
This ice cream spade is listed on the Oxo website for $7.99. I generally buy my kitchen items at Linens N Things or Bed Bath and Beyond, which accept each others coupons. (Ive also been told that BB&B takes expired coupons). This is a great way to save, and I only shop there with my coupons!
The Oxo Ice Cream Space
The dimensions are 9" x 3" x 1", and the spade weighs in at 5 oz.. The product picture is pretty self-explanatory, but the spade is like a big, squarish, flattened spoon. The edges arent razor sharp, of course, but they are like the edge of a regular scoop, and thin enough to make a good cutting edge.
The spade is made of aluminum, and the handle is made from Oxos trademark black Santoprene rubber. There are grooves in the sides of the handle to make it textured for additional non-slip security. There is also a hole in the handle, for hanging or other storage.
Although many of the Oxo kitchen tools I have are dishwasher safe, this ice cream spade is not recommended for use in the dishwasher.

My Thoughts
Looking at the Oxo ice cream spade, it isnt really obvious as to what its advantages are. But when I use it, I realize that it makes scooping ice cream easier. It makes sense when you think about it the spade cuts through ice cream, rather than scooping it. I know that with really hard ice cream, the spade can be easier to use. I also know that it makes it easier for my grandmother as well, who doesnt have a whole lot of strength. If we have ice cream that is rock hard, I would most likely use this tool. It acts to slice ice cream in what I think is an easier motion of cutting.
Some people like to run their ice cream scoops or spades under hot water, which aids in scooping the ice cream. Sometimes I do it; however, it leaves behind an icy layer on top of the ice cream, so I usually forego it.
The spade is nicely designed, and is very comfortable. The rubber handle is obviously non-slip, but the texture also aids in preventing slippage. Because it is rubber, it also wont conduct any coldness from the ice cream as well.
I have never had any durability problems with the spade. The handle and spoon have never, ever bent or not held up to the pressure of cutting into ice cream.
The only things I can think of that are negative about this product are very minimal. If I were to purchase one now, years later, I think I would be more likely to go with the non-stick, which I personally believe is an improvement.
It doesnt bother me that this spade isnt dishwasher safe, but it would be nice to have that option. I actually wash all my Oxo tools right away, so that they are clean and on hand, and so that I dont risk wear and tear on the rubber handles. Ice cream isnt that messy, so a simple rinse of the spade usually suffices anyway.
Another possible downside is that this spade wont give you your typical scoop-shaped balls of ice cream. But obviously, if you were making an ice cream cone, you wouldnt scoop with a spade. I really dont care what shape my ice cream is, so this is completely a non-issue for me.
Lastly, we have had our spade for a long time. The actual spade part seems to be darkening. The appearance of the spade is a non-issue for me, but is just something to note.
This is a solid ice cream spade, which utilizes a nice design to aid in cutting through ice cream, especially when it is hard. The handle is comfortable and one of my favorite aspects of Oxo products. Ill give this one 4 out of 5 stars, because it is sturdy and unique
yet Oxo has made upgrades to this spade with some newer models.
