What can I say? I love refrigerator magnets. There! My secret is out. Who wants to look at a boring neutral-color refrigerator when colorful magnets can bring it to life? Its a magnetic work of art. However, amidst all those beautiful decorator magnets are a few cleverly concealed useful magnets like my Oxo Good Grips All Purpose Clips.
Description
These magnetic clips come in a variety of colors: red, blue, green, yellow, black and white. At their widest point, these clips measure 3 3/4" and are 3" high. Two black handles stick upward from the top of the clip. The bottom portion of the clip is shaped in an arc, almost the shape of a half-circle with the bottom of the clip not quite a straight line. The curved lines in this clip lend it a graceful shape.
The top of the clip features two black soft rubberized grips (or handles) where a thumb and finger can pinch the grips closed to open the bottom of the clip. The bottom part of the clip is made from thick, durable plastic. A metal spring connects the two halves of the clip so that the clip opens and closes when the rubberized grips are pushed together.
Along the bottom edge of one of the clip halves is a narrow groove. The other clip half has a narrow ridge. When the clip is closed, the ridge rests inside the narrow groove, creating a tight seal. On the back of the clip is a circular magnet that has a 3/4" diameter. The magnet is strong, needing a tug to pull it free from a metal surface.
My Experiences
I admit that when I saw these clips at my local Linen n Things store, my eyes were attracted by the bold colors. I knew the Oxo name as reliable, so I added them to my basket. I bought two packages (each package contained one red and one blue clip).
As soon as I arrived home, I pulled the clips free from their packaging and experimented with positioning them on the refrigerator. I also tried one on the metal filing cabinet in my office. The clips stuck well to both the refrigerator and filing cabinet surfaces. The magnet required a bit of a tug to pull it free, which I like in a magnet. Its frustrating to place papers in a magnetic clip and then have the clip slide down the side of the refrigerator when the magnet isnt strong enough to support the extra weight. No problem with the Oxo clips. They stick!
I bet you are wondering what I have clenched in these Oxo clips. How many of you own a collection of take-out menus. Dont be shy ... admit that you have more than one. I have a lot! The blue Oxo All Purpose Clip is clutching a collection of Chinese and pizza place menus and coupons. (Dominoes pizza sends me coupons every week!) Another of the clips is holding an assortment of recipes that I havent yet filed. A red clip is in charge of holding a medium-size calendar (sent from a Natural History Museum). Since the clip on the side of the filing cabinet wasnt serving much practical use, I moved it to the refrigerator where it now grasps a list of emergency telephone numbers.
These clips are handy and dont slide down the refrigerator. They take their jobs seriously. Whether holding one piece of paper, a bunch of menus or a calendar ... these clips tightly grasp their contents without ripping the paper. The black rubberized handles are easy on the fingers, too, so that opening and closing the clip is simple.
I have been using these clips for about a year in a sunny kitchen, and the bright colors still look great no fading. The plastic is as good as when first purchased with no cracks or chips. One day while fidgeting with a clip, I accidentally slipped one of the rubberized grips off the handle. Now I can state with authority that the entire clip is made from plastic (except for the magnet and metal spring) and that the black rubberized grips slip over plastic handles. If the rubberized grips are firmly pulled upward, then they will come free from the clip; otherwise, the grips are a tight fit on the handles.
While fidgeting with the clip that day, I also managed to close it on my finger. I dont recommend it. The clip did not break the skin ... but it did pinch!
How to Use These Clips
Ive already mentioned how these clips hold a variety of papers on the refrigerator. But in a pinch these clips have come in handy for other things.
* Held closed a potato chip or cookie bag
* In an emergency (when another clip broke), held closed a pet food bag
* The kids thought it a cute hair ornament (dont ask!)
* Clamped the edge of a quilt while I hand stitched a tricky piece of binding
* Anchored some macrame in place while I knotted cords
Since this clip is 3 3/4" wide, it can grab a good bit of surface area.
Purchasing
I bought these clips in a 2-pack at Linen n Things for $4.99 a package, and I had a coupon, which gave me 20% off my purchase. The red and blue clips come packaged together (one of each color). The green and yellow clips are packaged together, and the black and white clips are packaged together.
Summary
I am glad I discovered Oxo Good Grips All Purpose Clips. They are a great addition to my refrigerator. I like the combination of the magnet on the back of the clip, lending it even greater versatility. Now I always know where those take-out menus are!
I hope you found this review useful.
