| Freak369's Full Review: Oxo Good Grips Stainless Steel Barbecue Basting Br... |
With the colder weather finally starting to arrive in Southern California, I am out on the patio almost every day cooking up some form of dead animal. Last year I came up with the ultimate teriyaki marinade for chicken breasts and thighs but some times I dont have the luxury of a 24 hour marinate time so I have to make due with basting the meat several times. Since this marinade has a little bit of oil in it I get those nasty flare ups that can be dangerous when wearing a jacket or long sleeved sweatshirt. Those worries are a thing of the past now that I have my handy dandy OXO Good Grips Barbecue Basting Brush. Until I invested in this I was using a shorter basting brush that was often referred to as a paintbrush by family and friends. They would laugh and joke about it while I painstakingly tried to coat the beef, chicken or fish and trying to avoid getting burned at the same time.
OXO Good Grips Barbecue Basting Brush
I have a number of OXO products that I absolutely love but none of them see as much use as this baby. The long nineteen inch wand allows me to reach all of the food on the grill surface without having to worry about getting burned and the bristles are soft enough to bend and flex and cover the surface of the food without having to apply a lot of pressure. One half of the basting brush is stainless steel and the other is a combination of hard and soft plastic. The metal wrap that is around the bristles is strong and sturdy and so far I think only three or four bristles have come loose when I was washing this. So far this has been a great cooking tool that has seen a lot of use and still looks great. This would be the perfect gift for anyone that loves to cook on the grill but cant stand the flames that can often accompany it. The handy hole in the handle allows this to be hung on a storage rack or on the accessory position of a grill keeping it just within reach when needs and safely out of bounds when not.
The plastic handle has the soft grip area that OXO has become famous for, not too soft that you have to squeeze it to keep hold of it but not rock hard solid just the right texture as well. Since my hands get a little greasy handling the various meats I wanted something that I could get a firm grip on without having it slide out of my hands and flop around like a fish out of water. This would be a great brush for anyone with hand troubles or who have trouble gripping things, the handle isnt very thick but it is extremely easy to grip and hold on to.
Care & Cleaning
You might not think that a basting brush would require a lot of attention but if you want it to last, you have to take care of it. This means rinsing it as quickly as you can after you are done using it, making sure the bristles are clean and rinsing out all the soap before air drying it. This is labeled as a dishwasher safe item but I rarely use my dishwasher and would rather take the extra time to hand wash it and ensure that it is 100% clean than to have it go through a wash and dry cycle only to find food stuck in it. I usually fill a tall glass with hot soapy water, dunk the end of the brush in and swirl it around for about a minute, then I check the bristles to make sure that all the marinate or sauce is gone then rinse with water until there are no more suds.
Price
This has a suggested retail price of $9.99 to $11.99 depending on where you shop. I found this at Marshalls for $6.99 and knew it was a complete steal so there was no way I could pass it up. Id seen this at several websites in the past and wanted to check it out but couldnt tell from the photos if it was what I had been searching for. Even though I paid $6.99 for this I can honestly say that this is well worth the suggested retail price especially if you have a short reach or like to baste things that contains oils or cause flare-ups. It does come with the OXO guarantee of satisfaction and is created with high quality stainless steel and the Good Grips plastic handle. Well worth the price in my opinion!
Things To Know
To keep your brush from falling apart on you or warping the bristles, try to store this in a drawer where there in enough room to accommodate it. If you are completely anal about your cooking tools [like me] you can invest a few dollars in a hard plastic oval cover that slides over the back of the brush head, just pull it over the bristles and it will protect them from getting warped or bent this will not keep it free of dirt so make sure you check the bristles to see if there are any crumbs or dirt in them before you start cooking. My drawers seem to accumulate crumbs so I have to check this brush and flick the bristles a few times to make sure its free of any foreign matter. Of course you could take the easy road and hand it on a hook but since this is pretty long, theres a good chance that it will get knocked over or off the hook on a regular basis unless its hung in a low traffic area.
The Bottom Line
So far this brush has been a true pleasure to use and has made my outdoor cooking a lot easier. Only a few bristles have come out and that was when I was cleaning it [always give it a good tug before using to see if there are loose ones ready to make a break for it]. If you are looking for a basting brush that will allow you to avoid getting burned when cooking on the grill, I highly suggest checking out the OXO Good Grips Barbecue Basting Brush.
