| Javelina's Full Review: Oxo Good Grips Steel Whisk |
After getting married recently, I was pleased to receive a bunch of Oxo items to add to my kitchen collection. I am fond of the Oxo brand, and when I received the 9 Oxo Good Grips Whisk, I knew it was something that would come in handy.
This item is listed on oxo.com for $6.99. I usually buy my Oxo items at Linens N Things, where we made our wedding registry. I also shop at Bed Bath & Beyond, and both stores issue $5 off $15 and 20% off coupons which are a real incentive. They take competitors coupons, and my BB&B takes their own expired ones. Many times I will buy 2 or 3 kitchen tools and use the $5 off coupon, which basically makes one free!
The Whisk
This Oxo whisk weighs in at 2 oz. It is obviously 9 long, but is overall 9" x 1" x 1" in size. If you are looking for something a little larger, you can buy the 11 whisk. Additionally, they have a balloon and flat version. The 11 is only a dollar more, so it really comes down to a matter of personal preference.
Like the name implies Good Grips this is an Oxo tool that has a rubber handle. The handle feels soft and has a rounded shape (as opposed to being perfectly cylindrical). The metal/wire portion of the whisk is stainless steel.
This item is dishwasher safe and has a satisfaction guarantee. Oxo guarantees all their items, so if you are dissatisfied or the item breaks (within reasonable limits, not like you threw it down the disposal and flicked the switch), they will refund or replace your purchase.
My Thoughts & Experiences
I actually already had a whisk when I got this one, but it is one of those silicone ones, and I really didnt like it (too weak and felt like it had too sticky of a surface). I have completely abandoned that one and now use my new Oxo one instead.
I love the Good Grips collection because I just love the rubbery handle. It provides a non-slip surface that means the whisk wont slide out of my hand even if I have oil, water, etc. on my palms. Even the shape of the handle is helpful, because it is more of a teardrop shape. The bulbous nature of it gives you, well, a good grip!
I use this whisk for a variety of things. Generally, it is for basic things like beating eggs, mixing ingredients, or mixing sauces/dressings. The size and shape is just right for myriad uses, and fits in both large and small mixing bowls. The wires are strong enough so that you can put some muscle into whisking!
The end of the whisk is not a solid piece; by that, I mean that the loops of wire do not connect. Instead, they loop over one another and are not welded together. I suppose this allows for more free movement of whatever you are mixing, and for less food (like cookie dough) to get stuck in the whisk. I find that it makes it easier to clean. Instead of trying to scrub a juncture (or even just a tight closeness) of several wires, I can just run the sponge right around them with no problem. The separate nature of the loops allows for much better access.
I like the convenience that this is dishwasher safe, even with the rubber handle. I usually wash these kinds of things by hand anyway so that they are always available, but I appreciate being able to just toss it in the dishwasher at my leisure. It is utensils like this that are harder to wash by hand if you leave it sitting in the sink or dishwasher and then realize you need it for something else!
The only thing I might improve on in this product is make the wires slightly stronger, although I suppose for their width, there is nothing you can do to make them stronger (without changing how thick they are). Another thing, actually, is that there is no hole in the handle like most other Oxo products. I dont have an Oxo tool rack yet, but its a thought!
Lastly, remember; dont use this item with non-stick cookware. The stainless steel wires will damage the non-stock surface.
Overall Thoughts
I think a whisk is essential in the kitchen, and Oxo is a great choice to go with. I can rely on this whisk for a variety of projects. The Oxo 9 whisk is sturdy and nicely constructed and a must to have on hand in my kitchen. I have no complaints about this product and it has been a nice addition to my collection of Oxo tools!
