Pros: A highly recommended product that accommodates a large amount of lettuce and works easily.
Cons: None. This is my favorite salad spinner.
I have owned the OXO Good Grips full size salad spinner for about eight years, and I absolutely love it. I am a huge salad eater, and I make salads for lunch and dinner on a daily basis. The full size OXO Salad Spinner can accommodate a huge amount of lettuce/spinach – it can fit a full size head of romaine lettuce, and it can almost wash a large 16 ounce bag of spinach.
The OXO salad spinner works using a pump mechanism with a soft knob (the good grips rubber) that you press to spin. It has a lock so that the basket will keep spinning after you start it up, and you can actually walk away from it while it is spinning. It also has a break to stop the spinner. The knob also locks down for storage. Significantly, it also has a nonslip basket which is great because it doesn't move around on the counter when you're using it. The full size salad spinner received excellent reviews from Cooks Illustrated, and according to their initial review in November 2005 and updated review in May 2009, it received a “highly recommended” in both tests. According to their review, this was the easiest model of salad spinners to use. This also has a 4.5 (out of 5) rating on Amazon.
When using this salad spinner, I typically place lettuce or spinach in the mesh spinning basket, and then place the mesh basket inside the large plastic outer bowl. I fill the bowl with water, and then let it soak for a few minutes in white vinegar (it is recommended to use 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water, which will apparently kill 98% of bacteria). I then drain the basket, and spin the lettuce until it is dry. I usually dump any accumulated water from the bowl, and then respin, to make sure the lettuce is fully dried. You can also place a piece of paper towel in the spinning basket to assist in absorbing any extra water.
The full size OXO Salad Spinner has a bowl capacity of 6.22 quarts, and the basket capacity is 4.95 quarts. The dimensions are 10'' x 10'' x 7.2" and it weighs 2 lbs. 5 ounces. In contrast, OXO also makes a Little Salad and Herb Spinner has a bowl capacity of 3 quarts, and the basket capacity is 2.44 quarts. The dimensions are 8'' x 8'' x 7'' and it weighs 1 lb. 2 ounces. I would NOT recommend buying the small version of this salad spinner. I have used it, and it is much too small to be useful.
In terms of washing the salad spinner, we clean it by hand because we don't own a dishwasher. I have read that the bowl can become warped if you put it in a dishwasher, so cleaning it by hand is recommended. The internal basket is sometimes difficult to clean because it is mesh, and the lettuce can become stuck in it, but this is an issue that I find with all salad spinners.
Overall, I would recommend the full size OXO Good Grips salad spinner without any reservations. I have purchased this salad spinner as a present on several occasions (usually after visiting somebody’s house who has an old awful salad spinner), and everybody who has received this spinner also loves it. It is $29.95. I’ve owned my spinner for several years and it still works fantastic, so you will definitely get your money’s worth out of it.
