I'll admit it. When I first brought home my label maker, I thought I might need to join my local chapter of labelmaker's anonymous! I can remember the poor excuse for a label maker that we owned when I was a child. You remember...crummy plastic tape that you fed into an equally crummy "label maker." And I say "label maker" loosely, because more often than not, the labels were barely readable. Remember pressing down on the squeezer with the strength of Hercules, just to see half an imprint? With the new generation of electronic labelmakers, those Herculean efforts are a thing of the past.
Brother's P-touch series has revolutionized the labeling of my life's possessions. The PT310 is easy to use, fairly easy to learn, portable and durable. I'll outline both my likes and dislikes below, which should help you in making your purchasing decision.
What's good about the PT310?
>>>Easy to use, well laid out keyboard. Yes, a keyboard! And, for you typists out there, it's even QWERTY style! It's not the biggest, as the unit only measures about 7" across. But, it works better than the keys on many other units, that aren't QWERTY. Why switch back to hunt and peck style when typing out your labels?
>>>HUGE variety of tape sizes and colors. You can even get Looney Toons tapes with Tweety or Taz backgrounds! How cool for labeling your kid's lunch bags or books! This model will take up to 3/4' tapes, and as narrow as 1/4"...if you can find them that small! I've used these tapes to label CD cases by cutting them down to size. Works well with a small type. (See next comment!)
>>>Wide variety of font styles and sizes. This even includes 53 built in symbols for your tapes. From smilies to font character symbols, you'll find 'em here!
>>>I love that this makes custom pre-inked stamps. An extra kit is required (Requires Stamp Kit SK-MB)but if this is an office or other need of yours, the PT310 is a good choice!
What's not so hot...
>>>Well, tapes for this...other than your standard black on white variety are hard to find. I've taken to bidding on eBay for some of the hardest to find, but would like to find more available right in my local Staples! I found a great 3/4" yellow on eBay, and when it's gone, I'm out of luck or will have to pay a very expensive catalog price!
>>>I hate the tape advance system on this. You have to advance the tape before cutting it off, and end up wasting almost 1/2" of tape with each label! Poor design or an evil plot to get you to buy more tape sooner? I'll let you decide!
As you can see, there's not much I don't like about this unit! What can you use this for, you're asking right about now? Well, try this:
-notebooks
-books
-CD jewel cases
-lunchboxes
-bookbags
-reminders you stick on your computer monitor
-nametags
-identification on any object you need to identify
-????
Brother offers a full line of these label makers. The PT310 is a good value for its capabilities and features. I've had mine for over 18 months, and it has worked flawlessly for me! Have fun choosing the one that fits YOUR needs best!
