| kdm2004's Full Review: PILOT CORPORATION OF Pilot G2 Retractable Gel Ink ... |
It's been many many months since I've written a review, but now I'm gonna get back into the swing of things with my review of the Pilot G2 Retractable pens.
These pens use refillable gel ink (and shockingly, you can actually FIND the darn refills in the store!), and obviously, are retractable. They feature the usual clip to clip the pen to your belt or notebook or whatever, but I've noticed the G2 seems to have a slightly less durable clip than most pens of its ilk. Still, it's a very nice writing tool.
The G2s come in a lot of colors. Black, blue, red and green are the most standard, but they also released purple, sky blue and pink. Around 2002 or so, they used to sell metallic ones, silver, gold, bronze, etc. I guess these are still around somewhere, but they were so poor - the ink skipped about 80% of the time you tried to write - they were probably taken from the market forever.
But the still-sold G2s are pretty good buys. They arent really cheap, but they're not bad compared to most other gel pens. My pack of I think 8 G2s set me back about $10. The ink is nice and dark, writes smoothly, and delivers a nice fine line (I'm not sure if they come in anything besides fine; if so, it's not that common, because I've never seen it anywhere).
However, and this is the bad thing, there are some drawbacks. The G2 will occasionally skip while you're writing, and there is a very very rare time when it refuses to start. However, a good shake usually gives it back its life. Still, this is an annoying problem to consider than happens enough for it to be mentioned.
Also, I happen to be left handed, which means I'm more prone to having my pens smear and smudge while I write. I noticed this DOES occur with the G2, although it pretty much does for all gel pens. Still, just so you leftys know, it does smear a bit if you don't give it time or write slowly.
If you're using notebook paper, you may notice that the G2 ink kind of bleeds through. It doesn't go through all the way, but it's totally visible on the back, and I tend to prefer pens that stay only on the side where you write with them. But, alas, it's the price of gel pens, and despite the drawbacks, I still recommend the G2 for basic writing needs as it survives for a good time without refilling, isn't too horribly expensive, and is easy to find in stationary stores (along with refills, although I've only ever seen blue or black refill cartridges).
