I dont know what I was thinking. Last fall, I made a little space in our house into a preschool. I put in some bookshelves, an easel, and some activities for us to use during school time and decided we were all set to go. I didnt put a table and chair in though. Theres not a huge amount of space, and I figured we could work on the floor most of the time. Very quickly, it became apparent that I was wrong. It was very difficult for us to do various craft activities sitting on the floor. So, we started using the kitchen table for activities, or would cuddle up to read on the couch.

A few weeks ago though, Hannah asked me to teach her how to write her name. She had taught herself the H but wanted to know the rest. So, I started to teach her, but I quickly realized that I did not have a place where she could comfortably write. It is important when teaching a child to write, that you incorporate proper posture into that as well. If they can sit up nice and straight and tall with their feet flat on the floor, it is easier to write and their handwriting is also neater. Unfortunately, I didnt have any such place for Hannah. We would sit at the kitchen table, and she would have to be standing on her knees on the chair to reach over and write. Even in a booster seat, it wasnt working out. I decided that we would need to find a place for a table and chair for her.
Once, that was decided I needed to choose a table and chair set for her. There were a few things that were important to me:
1) It needed to be big enough for both of my daughters to sit at and do school work at.
2) I wanted one that was fairly plain. Too much decoration can be distracting for school activities.
3) I wanted one that would be durable and would last until both girls outgrew it.
I found all of that in the PJ Kids Table and Chair set. Not only that it was quite inexpensive too!
So, what about the table?
The table is a 21 square table. It is wood with natural wood legs and a white melamine table. It is just a plain square, nothing fancy about it at all. Whatever the girls are doing is the main attraction at this table.
The set comes with 2 chairs. Each chair is 22 tall with the seat 11 off the ground. The seat is a simple square seat. The legs and back are natural wood and the seat is white melamine to match the table. The chairs are very lightweight and are easily carried by my daughters.
The table comes unassembled in a fairly thin box which weighs 22 lbs. However the directions are very clear, and I was able to assemble everything myself in about 15 minutes. Everything needed to assemble to set was included. No tools are required as an Allen Wrench is included to insert all the screws.
Everything fit together very well and the table was very sturdy when finished.
Overall Impressions of the Table:
I had seen this table on-line and it looked to be what I wanted. However, when I was out shopping last week and saw it, it was very wobbly and shaky and I didnt think it would work out. I started examining all the different tables there, and I realized that they were all a bit wobbly, and that perhaps it was an assembly issue rather than the table. So, I decided to buy it, and would just take it back if it wasnt sturdy.
After I assembled it, I was amazed at how sturdy it really is. I sat on it (definitely not recommended!) and it did not budge. Not even a little bit of a wobble.
The chairs also have a wide base and I compared them to others in the store to see so are also very sturdy and stable. I think the chances of my daughters toppling over in the chair are pretty slim.
The chairs are comfortable and fit my girls much better but have a little room to grow. When my older daughter is sitting in the chair, her feet are not flat on the floor yet, but the tips of her toes to touch the floor. So, I fully expect to get a few years of use out of this table. (She is 3.5 but on the small side)
I like that the table is square. Other tables I looked at especially wooden ones were round. I felt that a square table would give us more working area.
The table cleans very easily. My girls love their new table and prefer to use it, instead of the kitchen table. So, even though we have only had it for 5 days, we have done a craft activity at it every day and it always cleans up well, and still looks brand new. Hannah has her own child sized spray can and she is able to clean the table herself without a problem.
Finally, the price cant be beat. The table retails at $40 and I was comfortable paying full price for it. Most other table/chair sets in that price range are plastic. Most wooden table/chair sets retail in the $60-$80 range. At first I was a little worried about why this one was so much cheaper, but havent found a reason to be concerned yet. The quality is just as good, if not better than its higher priced brethren.
I think that this is a great table and highly recommend it! If you are looking for a workspace for your pre-schooler check this set out. It is very high quality, for very low cost.
