I have many different flash drives in my collection. I like to store different types of data and information on different flash drives, rather than having many different files on a few flash dives. I like to store my photos on some, videos on others, written data on others, and music files on others. I also like to keep my business files on different Flash Drives than on my personal Flash Drives as well. As such, I have quite a few flash drives from different manufacturers. Today I shall be reviewing a flash drive from a company that I had not previously been familiar with, but with whom I am now happy to report that I have become familiar with. Today, I shall be reviewing the PNY Attache III 8GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive. Read on and see if the 8GB version of the PNY Attache III USB 2.0 Flash Drive sounds like something you would be interested in looking into.
Since price is always an important consideration in making any decision to purchase a product, I think that I should start there. One of the things that I like about the PNY Attache III 8GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive is the price. I was able to pickup this 8GB version of the PNY Attache III on sale from a national office supply company for only $8.99. It has a list price of $30.99. That was a great deal, so I purchased several. Why such a low price? I assume that it was one of those deals where this item was on sale in order to draw customers into the store, who because they were already in the store, would then pick up some other items that were not on sale. Whatever the reason, this was a great price for all that this little PNY Attache III 8GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive has to offer.
As with any product there are some strong points and some weak points, and I shall do my best to present both the things I like about the 8GB version of the PNY Attache III USB 2.0 Flash Drive and the things that I do not like. One of the obvious pros in favor of using a device like this 8GB Flash Drive is that it is so compact, and yet it has such a large data storage capacity. As many of you who are reading this may already know, GB stands for Gigabytes, which means 1 billion bytes of information, and 8GB stands for 8 billion bytes of information. With such a large storage capacity, one can easily store even large data files, video clips, music, pictures, and the like, and take them along anywhere. Of course even bigger files can be stored on some of the other models of the PNY Attache, and there are some that have faster read and write speeds as well as other added features that this PNY flash drive does not have.
A very important point to clarify early on in this review has to do with how compatible is the PNY Attache III 8GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive with different computer operating systems. Well I have personally used it with Windows Vista, and Windows 7, and I have had no problems. The PNY website reports that it will work with virtually any device that has a USB port, but I will have to take their word for it as I obviously do not have access to every possible device that has a USB port to test this out on, and I do not personally own an Apple brand computer as of this writing. Is that a hint that I would like a Mac? You bet it is, and my birthday is coming up. O.K., back to reality. This Flash Drive will operate on an older computer with slower USB ports, but it will of course perform data transfers at the slower speed that the older port can handle. The write speed for the average document I tried transferring was about 5MB per second, and the read speed was about 10MB per second. O.K., that is not lightning, and there certainly are faster Flash Drives available, but it is reasonable, especially given the price of this device. The included literature indicates that this particular PNY Flash Drive it works with Windows ReadyBoost to enhance system performance with Windows 7 and Vista. I have not had the need to try this, as the computer I use for recording music in my studio has 32GB of RAM.
While we are on the subject of USB ports, this would be a good place to mention that the PNY Attache III 8GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive has a stationary USB connector. The USB connector is not retractable like some other brands, such as a Sandisk. However, in order to afford some protection for the USB connector, this Flash Drive has a retractable cap that slides back and exposes the USB connector. It remains attached the USB connector, and is not removable. I found this design to have both positive and negative features. I should mention that I purchased several of these Flash Drives. One for myself and two for one of my children for use with his college studies. I at first noticed that the sliding protector cap was a bit difficult to slide back and forth, and it took a bit of effort to do so. I decided that since the mechanism was made of plastic, that simply opening and closing the sliding cap several dozen times or so, would inevitably wear the rough spots down by virtue of friction from rubbing it, and that the difficulty in opening and closing the cap would be easily remedied. This worked beautifully and solved the problem in less that 3 minutes. I had assumed that this was a minor defect in the particular PNY Attache that I was using. To my surprise, my college student child complained that there was something wrong with both of the Flash Drives that I had given to them because it was so difficult to open and close them. I suggested that they try the same technique of simply opening and closing the flash drive about 50 times. I was delighted to hear that this completely solved the problem, and now all three Flash Drives open and close without any particular difficulty. If any readers of this review run into this particular problem, you now know the simple solution.
The dimensions of the PNY Attache I 8GB USB Flash Drive are 0.8 inches wide, 2.3 inches long, and 0.4 inches deep, and the weight is just 0.56 ounces. For the most part, these size dimensions are fine in most circumstances, and there was no problem with having two PNY Attaches plugged in one on top of the other on my laptop. Unlike some flash drives that offer a lot of frills such as password protected control and U3 Smart Technology, the PNY Attache III 8GB USB Flash Drive offers none of these features. It is what some call a "dumb thumb drive." Although some people may like these built-in features, I have found them to be more of a nuisance than a good thing. For my purposes a dumb thumb is just fine. If one wants a Flash Drive with all the extra frills built-in, there is the option of downloading these features from some Internet sites that offer these features. If however you are like me, and do not require or want these extra features, then the PNY Attache III may be what you are looking for, and it is certainly less expensive than a flash drive with extra frills, which in all likelihood, most consumers will never use.
Although the storage capacity of the PNY Attache III 8GB Flash Drive is obviously very impressive for such a remarkably small device, as least to my thinking, there are a few other potential problems with this particular flash drive that are worth mentioning here, as they might be annoying to some, and less so for others. One of my complaints has to do with how the PNY Attache III 8GB Flash Drive is designed. The PNY Attache III has a little hole at the back and to one side, that is designed to permit the user to attach something that will secure it to a device such as a lanyard. However, this hole is just that, a hole. It would have been nice to have a metal ring attached there or perhaps to have an eye or ring at the rear of the Flash Drive that a lanyard could be attached to. O.K., this is not a big deal, but it is a simple addition that would have cost next to nothing for the manufacturer to include, and which would have added to the functionality and utility of this particular Flash Drive. If I am going to take the PNY Attache III anywhere, I always put it in my wallet. It is slim enough to fit nicely, safely, and securely there, and I do not have to be concerned about it being attached to a keychain or lanyard. However, I would have preferred to have this option more easily available to me.
A complaint that I have, which is not a major one in the scheme of things, is that the PNY Attache does not have a built in LED that lights up when it is connected to the computer and is operational. I like to have a Flash Drive with a built in LED. There are times when I frequently have 3 or 4 different Flash Drives attached to a hub or directly to my computer. I like to visually see the LED flashing when I am copying or transferring a file. That is not going to happen with the PNY Attache III, and in my opinion, this is a drawback. Yes it is a minor one, and there are actually people who do not like to see flashing LED’s. But to me, I would have preferred to have a built in LED on this Flash Drive.
The bottom line for me is this, I like the PNY Attache III 8GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive. It is not the fastest flash drive by far, and it has no built in frills like password protection or U3 Smart Technology, and it does not have a built in LED, and does not come with a ring to attach a lanyard, although there is a hole on the back that would permit one to do so. It is basically a “Dumb Thumb Drive,” and I prefer it that way. It is also a bit hard at first to open and close the protective cap, but as I mentioned earlier, this can be remedied by simply sliding open and sliding closed the plastic cap about 50 times. Every product has good and bad points, but in my opinion, the strengths of the PNY Attache III 8GB USB Flash Drive outweigh the weakness that I have noted in this review, and I am pleased with it.
Well I would like to thank you for taking the time to read my review, but now if you will excuse me, I must get back to practicing my guitar.
