collin_ong's Full Review: Presto HeatDish Electric Compact Heater
I live alone in a medium size house and find it uneconomical to turn on the central heating because it heats up the whole house and I generally am only in one room at a time and use my bedroom and the living room the most.
At first, I tried an oil-filled radiator electric heater, and while that works well to heat my bedroom at night, it didn't work well in my living room, because the room has 25 foot high ceilings and the heat put out by the radiator heater just rose up out of where it could help me, and there was no way that and portable unit is going to heat up that whole room.
I decided to try this Heatdish heater because its purpose is to heat up what it is pointed at, not to heat up the whole room. That works great for exactly what I need in my living room. I put it in front of my couch, set it on low or medium and I'm comfortable watching TV or working on my laptop (as I am writing this review).
The heater is adjustable from low to high heat, which controls the thermostat and cycles the heating element on and off. At low, the unit barely ever comes on. At high, it is on almost continuously, glowiing red hot, and it is scorching. I leave it on medium to slightly above most of the time.
The angle of the dish is pointed slightly up, but I wish the angle was adjustable because it tends to point more at your legs rather than up at your body when you're on the couch. The unit has a tilt alarm that buzzes if the unit is knocked over or tilted too far. Sometimes this is annoying because I'll try to prop it up to change the angle a bit but it starts buzzing. I understand how this is a necessary safety feature, though.
It also has a footlight that stays on whenever the unit is plugged in. I wish this light was switchable because I don't like unplugging and replugging the unit all the time and I think it wastes power by staying lit continuously when it isn't being used or at night when the room is empty.
