Progresso LIGHT Chicken Noodle Soup: light soup?

Pros:Good tasting "light" soup.
Cons:Less noodles and less chunks of chicken, but that's to be expected with "light" soup.
The Bottom Line: This is a tasty lower calorie alternative to regular soup, but overall, there is not that much difference.
I did a sort of experiment last night for dinner. My son was a bit under the weather, and so asked for chicken soup for his supper. I opened a can of regular Progresso Chicken Noodle Soup and I opened a can of Progresso Light Chicken Noodle Soup to compare the two. I keep several cans in my pantry when I run out of ideas for dinner or we are eating light. Often, I stock up on Progresso soups when I find them on sale.

After opening the can, upon first observance, I noticed that the Progresso Light Chicken Noodle Soup appeared to have more broth, while the regular Chicken Noodle Soup appeared to have more substance to it -- that is, more noodles, chicken and carrots. It also appeared to have more "fat" floating n the broth.
I warmed each of the soups in two pans on the stove although you can choose to warm up this soup in the microwave, using a microwave safe container . The taste of the broth, which I sampled, was the same. Both were quite tasty and good. I definitely noticed that the Regular Chicken Soup had noticeably more pieces of chicken and noodles, whereas the Light Chicken Soup had less noodles, less chicken, but about the same amount of carrots. It also appeared to have more broth.
I must say that the end result of the two tasted very much the same. Even with the added "fat", the broth of each was very good and flavorful. I did not really miss the fact that there was less chunks of chicken and less curly noodles. To me, my favorite part of the chicken soup is the broth. If the broth is tasty, then that makes the soup for me.
The LIGHT chicken noodle soup has 70 calories per serving vs. 100 calories per serving for the regular chicken noodle soup.
Both types of soup have "low fat" and "No MSG added" printed on the label.
Comparing (same serving size), the difference between the two Progresso chicken noodle soups, Light & Regular, is as follows:
REGULAR Progresso Chicken Noodle Soup Facts:
Calories from Fat 20
Total Fat: 2.5 g
Saturated Fat 0.5g
Sodium 690 mg
Total Carb 12 g
Protein 7 g
Sugar 1 g

Calories from fat: 15
Total Fat 1.5 g
Saturated Fat 0.5g
Sodium 690 mg
Total Carb 10 g
Sugars 1 g
18.5 ounces net weight
Interesting too that the sodium levels are exactly the same. You would expect the protein levels to be less, since there is less chicken. I believe that is probably why the net weight is less too, even though the can is the same size.
Servings per container 2 for both. Both types of soup also have 0 trans fat.
The top ingredients in both: chicken broth, carrots, cooked white chicken meat, egg noodle, and celery .
The remaining ingredients are: (contains less than 2% of): water, salt, corn protein, chicken fat, egg white, xanthan gum, carrot puree, yeast extract, sugar, modified food starch, potassium chloride, onion powder, soy protein isolate, maltodextrin, sodium phosphate, garlic powder, natural flavor, chives, parsley, egg yolk, spice, beta carotene.
(Contains wheat, egg and soy ingredients.)

I would have to say that it is pretty much a toss-up on which soup you choose. The Progresso "light" soup really isn't more light on anything expect the chicken and noodles and therefore a little bit lighter on calories. Luckily, the taste is also just as good with the Progresso Light Chicken Noodle Soup, so the choice is yours!
It seems like soup is not all that heavy on calories to begin with, but if you're watching what you eat, better to skip that ice cream sundae than skimp on a bowl of soup. When you want a fast, hot and delicious meal for lunch or dinner, Progresso has good tasting soups.
