The Pur Plus does its job, but if I had it to do over again, I wouldn't waste my money on it.
After months of buying bottled water, it occurred to me that it would be cheaper to buy a filter I could attach to my sink. It said on the label that I would get three to four months of use per filter. As opposed to the couple of days I got out of a one gallon bottle of water. This sounded great, and so I bought the main Pur Plus and two filter attachments. I don't remember exactly how much they costed, but here is what I found:
Positive Points:
1) Cleans Water - The water was definitely cleaner. The clearest sign of this was that it tasted better, or rather it had less taste.
2) Less Expensive - In theory it was less expensive, although it would be very hard to calculate exactly how much use I got out of a single filter.
3) Customer Support - One of the things I care about is how nice customer support is and how easy they are to contact. I went to Pur's site and was able to email their customer support from their and the representative that responded was actually able to help and was nice about it.
Negative Points:
1) Bulky - In the commercials they show a person filling a glass of water in an empty sink from a Pur water filter. It looks perfect. There's lots of room in the sink and the water is crystal clear. The commercial is semi-accurate. If you have an empty sink there is enough room. Now fill your sink with dishes and try to maneuver around the Pur. That is where the problem lies. When you are not using the filter, you have to turn it. This means that it takes up even more room than normal.
2) Water Pressure - The water pressure is decent when the filter is new. Once it starts to saturate with elements that it is trapping from the water, the pressure drops. It can take for ever to fill a glass or a pitcher of water.
3) Saturation Level - You are supposedly able to get about three to four months of usage out of a single filter. I went through two in two months. When I e-mailed customer support they said it was no problem and sent me another one. This one also only lasted about a month. Evidently where I live the water is so full of harmful things that the filter becomes saturated much faster.
In short, if you have a large sink and don't do many dishes, the size issue won't be a problem. If you buy a lot of bottled water, then it may be worth it. However, if you live in a place where the water is really bad, you have a small sink, you may just want to stick to bottled water.
