Being a fan of Chinese food, I was very happy when I heard that P.F. Chang's would be opening. Where I live, there are two great Chinese buffet and take-out restaurants within 5 minutes from P.F. Chang's. These restaurants offer immense amounts of good food and variety for reasonable prices. Therefore, PF Chang's had a lot to prove to earn my business.
Atmosphere and Service
P.F. Chang's provides a pleasant atmosphere. There are large statues outside of and inside the building. The restaurant's colors are somewhat dark, but nice. A couple minor problems, the restaurant is one big room and the tables are somewhat close together. Service was very good. At the front desk, the hostesses were friendly and accommodating. At P.F. Chang's there are servers that have the sole job of traveling around the tables and making sure everyone's water glass is full. Being a big water drinker, I liked never having an empty glass. The regular server greets you and brings over and mixes P.F. Chang's special sauce. I found this sauce to be a little too sweet and not very tasty. Through the meal, our server was attentive and our food came quickly. As far as crowds go, I have no experienced any. If you dine around 5:00 or so, you won't run into crowds. However, I have seen the restaurant filled with people later on in the evening.
Menu, Food, and Price
The menu features anything and everything Chinese, with many different flavors and combinations. On the beverage front, there are many soft drinks and alcoholic beverages to choose from. Most food items will run you around $9.00 to $14.00. For families, I did not notice a children's menu. I decided to have the sweet and sour chicken, which was very good. Other dishes include orange chicken, lemon pepper chicken and shrimp, lo mein, steak, and much more. Each meal comes with the choice of brown or white rice. However, you can not get fried rice with meals unless you buy a $5.00 family plate. The first time I visited P.F. Chang's I ordered the white rice with my meal. It was stale, flavorless, and tasted as if it had been cooked days prior. Remembering this, I decided to try the brown rice the second time around. I found it to be just as bland as the white rice.
Putting aside the rice, most of the food is very good. The sweet and sour chicken I had was fresh and flavorful. While there was a good amount of chicken, I did not feel as if there was enough food served. This could have been due to the fact that I could not stomach the rice, but there were not many vegetables served with the plate. Oddly, there is no salt and pepper available in the restaurant. Also, I think many people would like the option of getting noodles instead of rice as the side dish. The meal is concluded with a fortune cookie.
Is it worth it?
Well, yes and no. Whether or not I would dine here over the Chinese buffets depends on my mood. If I am extremely hungry, P.F. Chang's is a no go. However, if I am in the mood for a more pleasant dining experience, great service, and nice environment, and am not starving, P.F. Chang's is my Chinese food destination.
