Bio Oil for Scars & Skin Discolorations

Pros:Smells wonderful, not greasy, fades melasma and burn scars

Cons:Glass bottle makes it hard to get product out

The Bottom Line: Bio Oil is a winner!  It does fade scars, and uneven skin tone.

There are a lot of products on the market today that make some amazing claims, but unfortunately many of them simply don't live up to the hype.  When you find that one product that does work, you want to share the good news with others.  That's why I want to tell you about an amazing product called Bio Oil.

Bio Oil comes in a white box with orange print, and inside this box is a small glass bottle containing 2 ounces of a peach colored oil.  The claims on the outside of the box are what caught my attention, as this product claims to be for: scars, stretch marks, uneven skin tone, aging skin and dehydrated skin.

My Thoughts

I was, as usual, a little skeptical about purchasing Bio Oil, especially since it was priced at $12.00.  But there were only two bottles left on the shelf, so it appeared to be a good selling product.

There is a sheet of paper inside the box that explains a little bit about Bio Oil, and says that it contains a patented ingredient called PurCellin Oil, which works synergistically with other key ingredients like Calendula, Lavender, Chamomile and Vitamins A & E.

The insert says that you can use this during pregnancy to help prevent stretch marks, and that it is also beneficial for women who have skin pigmentation issues due to hormones.  That is me.  I am 53 years old and my dermatologist told me that some of those small spots on my face are not age marks, but rather a condition called melasma, which is caused by hormones.  Bio Oil claims to help fade those spots!

Let me tell you, I have been pleasantly surprised by this product!  Since the bottle is made of glass, you have to basically pour it out, which is my only complaint about Bio Oil.  It's hard to control how much comes out of the bottle.

This is indeed an oil, but when I rub it into my skin, it absorbs very quickly, and does not LOOK like an oil has been applied!  Maybe my skin is drier than most others, but this absorbs extremely quickly, leaving the skin soft and moisturized.  I am still trying to figure out how an oil can be absorbed so quickly into the skin and not be greasy!

My second worry was about the scent.  I am sensitive to many scented skin care products, and I especially cannot tolerate certain flowery scents such as roses.  Bio Oil has a very light smell, and while I would describe it as slightly flowery, it's a very soft scent that doesn't bother me in the least.  The smell also fades in time so it's not that noticeable an hour after I have applied it to my skin.

In reading the insert in the package, I was very surprised to see that Bio Oil is hypoallergenic and won't irritate sensitive skin, and that it contains no preservatives!  That is almost unheard of in todays market, and I am a proponent for natural products, if they work.

If you are reading this far, you are probably interested in knowing what goes into Bio Oil, as was I.  The ingredients are:

Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil), Triisononanoin, Cetearyl Ethylhexanoate, Isopropyl Myristate, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Anthemis Nobilis Flower Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender Oil), Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Oil (Rosemary), Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil (Sunflower), Glycine Soja (Soybean Oil), BHT, Bisabolol, Perfume (Fragrance), CI 26100 (Red 17).

I know that the ingredients lavender, vitamin E, and calendula are all good for the skin, but whatever fragrance is added to this oil, it masks those scents.  I love lavender and I don't detect a hint of it in Bio Oil.

Now to the bottom line, does it work?  I had a few areas that I was interested in trying Bio Oil on.  I have a faint scar just below my eyebrow that I have not been able to make disappear, and Mederma scar fade cream did nothing for it.  I also have a large 1/2" by 1/4" burn scar on my left forearm from my curling iron.  Actually I have several other small burn scars from my curling iron (my husband has threatened to take it away from me!).  When my hairdresser cut my hair, she undercut the back too short, and it's very difficult to curl those hairs without burning my neck!

I can say that Bio Oil works.  It does indeed fade scars, but you have to keep at it, and can apply the oil several times a day for faster results.  If you don't see any changes in your skin after a few weeks, don't give up, keep using Bio Oil and I bet you will eventually notice an improvement.

Although it does say it reduces stretch marks, I am not overly concerned about those.  I still have them on my stomach from my pregnancy years ago, but I am well past the age of wanting to get into a bikini.

Bio Oil  works better than any other products I have bought for fading the spots from melasma.  But even if I didn't have any scars or spots to deal with, Bio Oil would still be a valuable beauty product for me simply due to it's amazing moisturizing properties!

The 2 ounce bottle will last for months, and I like to put a Q-Tip at the end of the bottle, which helps me not to waste it.  I wish there were a better way of getting it out of the bottle, but at the same time I am very happy that Bio Oil is packaged in a glass bottle, as I much prefer glass to plastic.

Bio Oil did what it claimed it would do!  And that is great news in my opinion, news worth sharing!  I consider this $12 well spent.

Bio Oil is a product of Union-Swiss, a company that has been around since 1954, so they have a good track record!
