roostrfsh's Full Review: Pacific Rim Cube Travel (TRV-SPK-TE) Docking Stati...
PacRimTechnologies.com Travel Cube Speakers is something I havent seen it mentioned on many reviews. Because of the low-price, I think it is underestimated and ignored. I use it when Im traveling light. Folded, it is an undersized and well-protected rounded edge, almost square, cube. Pop it open, add your iPod or other MP3 player, and in less then a minute youll be listening to your music on your mini-stereo system. The best part is that it sounds really good. It is worth your time to check them out.
It is simple to use anywhere. The power is 4 x AAA batteries or the supplied AC adapter and a red LED light will tell you when it is on. Simply unfold the cube and attach the 3.5mm wire to your iPod or any MP3 player. My friend used it on his Zune player and he is sold. By the way, you cant lose the wire because it is permanently attached and ingeniously wrapped around the cube. I set the volume on the cube to 90% of full power by guesswork then use my iPod to control the loudness.
Youd be surprised at how loud the cheap cube gets. It not only sounds loud but it sounds sweet. You wont be disappointed unless you are expecting a full-blown system. The Cube is advertised as 200 20k frequency response and Id agree. There is an attempt at bass but it is clearly not a thumper; Im not surprised since the drivers are small and the output is only 0.9 watts for each speaker. It does have a warm, robust, and strong midrange and clear high sounds. Vocals are clean and clear. It doesnt have a lot of stereo separation because of the limited distance of the drivers. But it will fill a small and quiet room with pleasant sounds. It wont sound honky, tinny, or cheap. Its a personal speaker system to share with a small group. I wont say it is perfect but what it has does very well. Its simple and gets the job done with a very minimal design. There are no grill protectors so watch for fingers pocking the metal drivers. It is made of average quality but it doesnt feel cheap. It doesn't charge the iPod. With a little work, you can bump the top of the cube, where the batteries are stored, knocking off the top and spilling the batteries. Dont worry; the top will stay in place with normal use.
The package comes in a blister pack that holds the speakers, the adapters and the AC adapter. The two adapters fit in the front for different size iPods but if you are on the go then leave the adapters at home. Your biggest choice is the color- black or white. There is no remote or 3D expander. What do you expect for $20? For its price, it is a perfect on the go or office desk speaker system.
I find the main advantage is that if I lose or break it, I wont be out a lot of money; Ive already got my moneys worth out of it. Its an inexpensive speaker system that wont break the bank. My only regret is that I didnt buy a second one to keep at work. Its is funny to see the people at work playing with it. They dont expect decent music to come out of it.
Let me add one more thing. DONT BUY the clones. Only buy the original from Pacific Rim Technologies. There are many clones at the brick and mortar and online. The clones are easier to find and much cheaper but they are truly clones with the exception that they sound terrible tinny! Ive seen and been tempted to buy the clone cubes at the local Miser Mart. Other office workers have the clones and we can tell which one is the real one just turn them on. It takes two seconds to figure out which of the five cubes is the original. Ive had customers at work ask why my speaker sounds better then the others until I put a small sign on it saying, Its not the same as the others. I found the best way is to buy the speaker directly from the company. Here is the link I used- http://www.pacrimtechnologies.com/detail.aspx?ID=43 . The UPS code is 852712000829. Let me add that the clones, while much cheaper, do not include an AC adapter. The Pac Rim Cube is beyond doubt an underestimated speaker system. Prove yourself a fancy pant, a smart buyer, and get one of these cubes. Youll see is worth the extra effort for the better portable sound.
