Pacon® S.A.V.E -Save All the Vital Earth- Recycled Chart Pads are a standby in the primary classroom.
I have used flip type charts from the time I began teaching; and find them particularly valuable for use during Language Arts instruction. Each week I write the phonics focus, new words for the story we are to read, spelling words and high frequency words on a chart page. During the week Little Persons, whether those a quarter century ago or those in Osage County First Grade today work with me to learn the concepts set down on the chart.
Although the details presented regarding this particular chart indicates that the alphabet on the cover of the chart is presented in cursive script, the photo on the Epinions page shows that it is not; the one publicized is offered in either manuscript and cursive cover lettering, lines on the chart pages themselves are blue featuring both solid and slotted lines and measure 1.5 inches apart, SEE IT buttons take the reader to a variety of Pacon tablets. . Tablets and easel pads, chart stands, racks and easels are all available from Pacon. Chart Stands supply an expedient means for displaying Chart Tablets wherever they are needed. I have two such chart stands, each holding a chart tablet(s) in my classroom. One holds the 24 x 32 tablet we are using today. The other holds the tablets we have used, or will be using.
Some of the charts can be reused, in the case of the Language Arts weekly charts based on the teaching plan for the story we are reading and the charts will be reused until our basal reading series is changed.
The ability to make a chart to fit the particular story teaching plan and then re use several times is one benefit to be found for using these chart tablets.
Pacon chart tablets and pads are calculated to support classroom demonstration for various Language arts focus areas. I use an additional chart; I find the 24 x 16 inch tablets to be highly useful for daily handwriting lesson, and as one more strand for phonics drill. Rather than simply present rhyming or other phonics material as rote, or auditory I also follow up with writing with the Little Learners during which I write on the chart and Little Writers write in their journals followed with Little Writers write additional words, sentences and phrases in their journals, share with the group and we all write more using the additional words, phrases and etc presented by the class as a whole.
Pacon offers two basic styles of white sulphite bond paper, so called hand writing chart pads; these are tablets fashioned from 70 pages of ruled on both sides sheets, and are either padded -glued- and tape bound or are spiral bound, have 2 to 5 holes at the top, a stiff cover featuring either Manuscript or cursive lettering and are attached to a heavy chipboard backing. Tablet sizes are 24 x 16 and 24 x 32 with the shorter 24 x 16 inch tablets ruled the long way, while the 24 x 32 inch tablets are ruled the short way.
The tablets are crafted from varying strength of recycled materials; those in the S.A.V.E group are my preferred tablets. The S.A.V.E tablets are padded, crafted from 100% recycled materials and can be recycled. Recycling is something I do and teach.
In my classroom it is the 24 x 32 inch tablets which are produced on a semi permanent basis, while 24 x 16 inch tablets are used for daily handwriting, Today is Monday, dot, sot, rot, etc. type work.
During letter writing experience, or for journal writing I begin the term writing for the Little Learners to copy along letter by letter, we have reached the stage now that Little Writers write first, tell me what to write and then I write as Little Learners check their own work. The activity is often filled with -oh no- I forgot the capital, or I thought it cot not caught- and the like.
In checking the SEE IT buttons I find both Manuscript and Cursive alphabet covers can be ordered as well as 24 x 16 inch or 24 x 32 inch tablet sizes. I use whatever is available in our school supply closet, children do see cursive letters ongoing whether we actually teach that style script or not so I do not see a problem with whatever the cover lettering.
Whatever the style of script, cursive or manuscript taught; the covers of the charts can be utilized for students having particular problem with letter formation. The alphabet on the cover is presented in upper and lower case letters with arrows showing just how to form the letters. Numerals 1 - 9 plus 0 as well as punctuation marks are also shown. Question marks in particular present a knotty problem for most Little Writers.
The drawbacks I have found when using chart tablets are two, the 70 page tablets are handy, tablets do not need to be replaced as quickly as the lesser page ones, on the other hand they are HEAVY and several on the chart rack become quite unwieldy.
The larger problem I find is - only one side of the paper can be used despite the fact that both sides are ruled; bleed through is always a constant whatever type marking pen I use, pencil is not satisfactory for use because Little Writers cannot see the letters very well even though the kids are sitting on the rug just beyond my knee, and crayon is just plain not my fav writing instrument. The bleed through generally results in some spotting on the next sheet down, however; the kids quickly adapt and ignore the dots and blemishes. On the other hand trying to use the back of the sheet is an impossibility with the bleed through there too heavy to ignore.
Despite the bleed through I still like and use Pacon chart tablets on a daily basis; the tablets are sturdy, reusable, and easy to find and use.
Happy to recommend Pacon® S.A.V.E -Save All the Vital Earth- Recycled Chart Pads.
