| sweet_caroline's Full Review: Palisades Muppet Show Series 3: Scooter |
I'm starting to get a pretty large collection of Palisades Muppet Figures now, and Scooter is one is one of my favorites. How can you not love the happy little gopher, that many of us remember from The Muppet Show in the 70s and 80s. Especially since this figure is done by Palisades and has the usual excellent quality, detail and likeness.
SCULPT AND PAINT:
I found that the job Palisades did of Scooter's sculpt and paint was of excellent quality. The detail is awesome, and easily holds its own against the best figures in the line.
He is wearing a shiny green jacket with yellow trim and The Muppet Show logo on the back, a yellow turtleneck, blue jeans, as well as red sneakers with white laces and soles. His green and yellow bomber jacket is very detailed with a nice sheen to it that makes me believe that it's supposed to look like a satin or nylon finish. It comes complete with six silver snaps down the front, 2 side hand pockets with yellow trim, as well as cuffs and collar that are detailed to resemble elasticated material. It is pliable plastic and I find that this is really neat and unlike a lot of other figures out there. To complete his wardrobe, he's wearing a yellow turtleneck that has a knit fabric appearance, and blue jeans with a zipper fly, front side pockets, stitched seams, and wrinkles, pleats and cuffs to add to the realism.
Scooter's hands and head are also very well done. They are orange in tone with a fur-like appearance to perfectly capture his likeness. He permanently wears his well known pair of black glasses with his eyeballs painted right on them rather than physically on his face, just like he always has been on the Muppet Show. And of course he wouldn't be complete without his hair, which is a cute tuft of dark orange curled ringlets on his head.
All in all I find the detail excellent and likeness to the real Scooter character superb. Very well done!
ARTICULATION:
Scooter has an impressive 10 points of articulation. He turns his head slightly from side to side, his arms bend at the elbow and shoulders, as well as rotate outward for added posing ability. His hands also rotate at the wrists. He turns at the waist and bends at the knees. I really like the movement capability of this figure, as it allows for him to be posed him in various positions. I also found that he stands very well on his own, even though he does come with a stand that you can use if you like.
ACCESSORIES:
Scooter comes with a lot of accessories for a figure, all of which are very well detailed and realistic looking.
His props include:
-A red and pink skateboard with a black topside, which Scooter can actually be placed on to ride.
-2 soft drink cups complete with straws, lids and a cardboard tray
-A clipboard with a metal clasp and white loose-leaf paper
-A Chinese food takeout box with a black handle
-A black and chrome 70's style portable radio with all the details
-A gray megaphone
-A round black stand (although he stands fine on his own)
I find that Scooter can hold most of his accessories in his hands, but be careful not to force them too much or else the paint tends to come off onto his hands. I found these accessories appropriate, as Scooter, son of the theater owner, used to just hand around and help out the other Muppet Show characters. In any case, they are fun props to have with this figure.
PACKAGING:
This figure is packaged in the older styled cardboard backing with plastic bubble on the front. I find that this type of packaging can get more damaged and worn than the new blister packs that Palisades has started using with Series 4. The cardboard backing has information about the Muppet character and shows other figures in the series. It also credits the painters, creators, sculptors, etc.
FINAL JUDGMENT:
This figure is an excellent and almost necessary addition to any Muppet collection. It has outstanding workmanship, which any collector will appreciate. The figure is also great if you are just buying it for fun because you are a fan of the Muppet Show. But be aware... you buy one and you'll want all the rest! Use caution if you are buying for a child. There are small parts and can possibly be broken if played with roughly. Therefore I wouldn't recommend it for kids under 5 years of age.
