Pros: Ease of use, screen lighting, Plentiful third party hardware & accessories.
Cons: No voice recorder
The Bottom Line: With the ease of use, 16 MB of memory, hard and software compatibility and exceptional screen, I find the Palm 515 impossible to beat for the price.
I'm new to the PDA market, but did weeks of research before deciding on the Palm 515.
Being so use to the tactile "Dayrunner," I wondered if I would find a PDA useful.
Answer; I use my Palm like I use my telephone.
I installed the Palm software, plugged in the cradle and pushed the Hot Sync button. I was ecstatic when everything worked perfectly on the first try. A rare occurrence in electronics!
The graffiti option is easy to learn, & brings that tactile, Dayrunner feel. The only frustration I had was I kept hitting the "Notepad" button while trying to write graffiti on the pad. A hand position change remedied that problem and I was back on my way.
When adding tons of text, type it on your computer using Palm's software, hit the "HotSync" button and whala, it transfers to the Palm in seconds.
If you're away from your computer, no worries. A foldable third party keyboard hooks directly into the Palm for those marathon typing sessions, when poking on the screen keyboard simply won't do.
I've read opinions about screen resolution on the 515. Though not Sony Clie clear I find the resolution more than satisfactory.
Its a PDA, not a desktop. I'm not expecting 32-bit resolution when I'm looking up my dentist appointment.
I still get plenty of oohs, and aahs when showing off pictures of my kids on this little unit, so don't let the "Lack of resolution" scare you. It's very good.
The 515 comes with 16 Megs of RAM which is more than sufficient for most users. I purchased 32 Megs of additional RAM with the Palm, but with all of my pictures, games, notes, and documents, I have only used 10 Megs of memory. Therefore a tip. Don't purchase RAM until you know how much youll really be using!
Third party hardware and software are plentiful for Palms. This was the last deciding factor in my purchase.
The "Sony Clie" has better screen resolution, but trying to find accessories, memory upgrades, and third party hardware for a Sony can be a challenge! I'm too busy for challenges.
Walk into any electronics store, show them your Palm and they'll show you aisles of accessories for it.
Convenience is my friend!
In short, the Palm 515 is one of handiest tools I have ever purchased. It's small, light, versatile, and blessed with sturdy metal case construction.
I highly recommend This little life saver for anyone trying to get rid of that bulky organizer and yet stay organized.
