Pros:Inexpensive, individually wrapped pieces, comparable to a Reese's.
Cons:Seasonal product, not safety sealed, can be hard to find.
The Bottom Line: If you are a peanut butter and chocolate fanatic you have to give these a try!

I have always been a lover of Palmer Chocolate; some people knock it because it is inexpensive but most of the time it is comparable in taste to the big name chocolate companies like Hershey and Mars / MasterFoods. Every year they come out with a new spin on a candy classic; the peanut butter cups are a staple of their chocolate sales and they give them a dressing up for every season. This year they changed the designs on the pumpkin foil wraps that cover the peanut butter cups but they are still the same delicious cups inside. The bags of these started surfacing at our local stores about two weeks ago so when I was stocking up on Skeleton Pops, Eyeball Gum Balls and other assorted Halloween candy for treat bags I grabbed a couple of these. Palmer also makes my all time favorite Fright Bites and Chocolate Zombies. I only pray that I can get to the store first thing Monday when they get the new Palmer shipment in, if you aren’t there first thing in the morning you are completely out of luck.
So what makes the peanut butter cups from Palmer so special? Nothing really. If you like the taste of a Reese's Cup or any of their varieties then chances are you will love the taste of these; if you bought the Wal-Mart house brand of peanut butter cups and liked those – these are almost identical. To me the peanut butter is a little creamier so it doesn’t have a gritty taste to it. Palmer has two different kind of peanut butter cups to choose from; the first is a basic peanut butter cup that is foil wrapped. The second is a peanut butter cup that has a hard candy pumpkin pressed into the top of the cup. Those look almost the same as these but have the word "Deluxe" on the outer package. Palmer also makes a larger individually wrapped peanut butter pumpkin that is comparable to the Reese's Peanut Butter Pumpkin made for Halloween but they are almost impossible to find in my area. Last year they had "Peanut Butter Tombstones" but they weren't the strongest sellers so I have no idea if they are going to make them this year.
The only downside to these is that they are foil wrapped so they are not something that you are going to want to hand out to trick or treaters that come knocking at your door. If you are making treat bags for kids that you know then that is a completely different story – Palmer does make an individually wrapped peanut butter cups that are sealed in a sleeve so if you are looking for something to hand out at Halloween you will want to get those instead of these. The price per bag depends on the size you get. The ten ounce bags were about a dollar but product downsizing has dropped them to eight ounces for the same price. The two pound bags are something that you will probably have to get at a candy wholesaler as most stores won’t carry them. One place to check is Wal-Mart; they get some of the larger sized bags of Palmer seasonal candy in stock. A dollar a bag isn’t a bad price for them and even though some people call it "generic chocolate" chances are they never bothered to give it a taste. In any event, it's their loss which means more for me.
These are something that you are going to want to go easy with; a serving is three cups and that contains a whopping 180 calories. Compared to the single serve larger ones that are 230 calories, these are a little better choice to have around. While you are getting eight grams of protein from the peanut butter it’s the calories and carbohydrates that you have to worry about. Personally I like these just as much as the regular Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and the mini versions so I do have to grab a couple out of the bag or candy dish and then cut myself off. This is a seasonal item so you are only going to find it around Halloween; the good news is that Palmer makes these for almost every holiday so if you try them and like them you don't have to wait until Halloween to enjoy them.
These make for a great item to put inside a Halloween piñata if you are looking for ways to fill one with edible treats. The foil wrappers have different colored pumpkin face designs on them so you do get some color variety but the cups inside them are all the same. If you passed up Palmer chocolates in the past thinking that they wouldn't have a good taste to them or that they were cheap chocolate you really don't know what you are missing.
